As part of the Electronics Hardware & Power System team, you will lead the development of advanced vision systems for Dyson products. This role requires deep technical expertise across the entire vision stack — from optics and camera modules to image sensors and image processing algorithms.
You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, electronics, and software engineering, as well as the platform team, to architect and build a scalable, long-term vision system platform that supports multiple product categories. This includes defining and developing common hardware and software frameworks that bridge New Product Introduction (NPI) and New Product Development (NPD), enabling efficient reuse and accelerated innovation.
About the role- Lead the design and simulation of optical systems for vision applications, including lenses for camera systems, TOF sensors, and illumination optics.
- Define and review technical requirements for vision system components — lenses, sensors, cameras, and image processing pipelines — throughout the development lifecycle.
- Develop and validate test methodologies for optical performance, including tolerance analysis, aberration, stray light, and sensitivity.
- Work with vendors to ensure optical and vision system components meet performance, manufacturability, and quality standards.
- Analyze experimental data and correlate with simulation models to optimize system performance.
- Collaborate with the platform team to build a unified vision system architecture and framework that supports cross-category product development.
- Drive the integration of vision systems into product platforms, ensuring seamless interaction between hardware and software components.
- Support the transition from NPI to NPD by developing scalable and reusable vision system modules.
- Act as a technical leader and mentor within the team, promoting best practices in vision system design and development.
- B.S. or M.S. in Optical Engineering, Opto-Electronics, Computer Vision, or related fields.
- 5+ years of experience in vision system development, including optical/lens design, camera integration, image sensor selection, and image processing.
- Strong proficiency in optical simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, LightTools, CODE V) and image processing frameworks (e.g., OpenCV, MATLAB).
- Experience in designing and characterizing camera systems, including sensor tuning, lens calibration, and image quality evaluation.
- Familiarity with hardware/software co-design principles and embedded vision systems.
- Proven ability to develop scalable frameworks and platforms for vision systems across multiple product lines.
- Experience in DFM, DFX, DFMEA, and optical bench testing.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to correlate simulation with experimental data.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to work effectively across disciplines and with external partners.
- Self-driven, high integrity, and results-oriented with a passion for innovation.

What We Do
At Dyson we are focused on solving the problems that others have ignored; solving them first using our technology and ingenuity. In order to achieve this we need to pioneer technologies that are different and authentic. This is the core of what we do and who we are. We must strive to create the future, every single day by developing new things, different things, things that go against the grain with a diverse and global team of ingenious minds.
Dyson employs over 14,000 people and is present in more than 80 countries. And while we are growing fast we want Dyson to remain a start-up in spirit with the freedom of experimentation and learning, constantly reinventing our products as well as reinventing how we work, how we sell and how we support our owners. At the same time we are working through the James Dyson Foundation, James Dyson Award and Dyson Institute to inspire future engineers and pioneering a new approach to engineering education.
Underlining everything we do in this diverse environment is the need to always show respect, supporting each other as one team to overcome whatever challenges we encounter. We drive empowerment, development and equality in an inclusive environment for our people around the world.
The future doesn’t just happen, we look to make it happen, to achieve leaps through pioneering new ideas
