Why This role

Stellic is at a significant crossroads. Having proved incredibly strong product-market fit, and having maintained enviable customer NPS ratings, it’s time to prepare for the next stages of our evolution. Our core intellectual property consists of a set of NP-hard algorithms that help students plan their path to graduation. They work well enough, but are ripe for improvements. Our ambitious roadmaps will allow us to continue to improve the lives of students all over the world, but at the center of our success lie algorithms that work well, run fast, and are built for scale. We need someone who can lead us into the future by driving upgrades to our algorithms while at the same time up-leveling our current engineering team’s ability to delight our users with new product capabilities.

What you'll do:

  • Work closely with the founders and product managers to understand the Why behind each capability in the platform
  • Help to drive alignment on the prioritization of engineering-driven priorities along side product priorities 
  • Design and implement advanced algorithms for complex optimization problems in enterprise resource allocation
  • Develop machine-learning models to predict and optimize business processes and operational efficiency
  • Create scalable solutions for NP-hard scheduling and routing problems using modern operations research techniques
  • Validate the correctness of your algorithms through simulation across a wide array of real-world scenarios
  • Transform academic research into practical, production-ready implementations

What you'll need:

  • Strong ownership mindset and the ability to autonomously lead and drive complex implementations
  • Deep curiosity, customer empathy, and commitment to engineering as a craft
  • Ability to plan, estimate, and manage the technical aspects of project execution and delivery
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Impeccable communication skills for collaborating with product, design, and customer-facing teams

What we need from you:

  • Advanced degree (Masters/PhD) in Computer Science, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or related field
  • 5+ years experience in algorithm development and optimization, especially in the NP-hard problem space
  • Deep understanding of data structures, algorithmic complexity, and performance optimization
  • Expert proficiency with SQL (PostgreSQL a plus)
  • Production-ready programming skills in Python and scientific computing libraries like NumPy, Pandas, Polars, DuckDB, etc.
  • A proven track record deliveribg production-grade algorithmic solutions
  • Experience with distributed computing and large-scale data processing

Compensation:  $220,000 - $260,000 base salary, plus equity

Work location: Candidates must be willing to work in-office in San Mateo 3 days per week as part of our hybrid work culture.
