Job DescriptionWe are looking for a Lead AI Engineer to join our Sofia engineering organization and lead the delivery of AI-native software solutions across our decisioning platforms.
This is a senior technical leadership role with line management responsibility, combining hands-on engineering, architectural ownership, and people leadership. The role strengthens our capability to deliver AI-first solutions at scale, while building and leading engineering teams. You will report to Software Engineering Director.
What you'll do:
Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Design, build, and deliver AI-native, production-grade systems integrated into core platforms
- Develop and operate scalable, secure, and high-performance AI services
- Define and guide architecture, system design, and engineering standards
- Embed AI capabilities into business-critical workflows and decisioning platforms
Hands-on Engineering
- Contribute directly to development using modern backend technologies and engineering practices
- Champion clean code, testing, and engineering excellence across the SDLC
People Leadership (Line Management)
- Directly manage a team of engineers, ensuring clear ownership, accountability, and delivery outcomes
- Coach and develop team members, supporting growth in both software engineering and AI capability
- Drive performance management, feedback cycles, and career development
- Create a culture of high standards, continuous improvement, and execution discipline
AI Capability & Transformation
- Drive adoption of AI engineering practices, including model integration and lifecycle awareness
- Contribute to building AI capability within the Sofia engineering organization
- Bridge business priorities, AI strategy, and engineering execution
Collaboration
- Work closely with Product Owners, Architects, and stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions
What you'll bring:
- Strong experience in software engineering (Java / backend / distributed systems)
- Proven experience leading engineering teams as a line manager
- Track record of delivering scalable, production-grade systems in enterprise environments
- Experience working with or integrating AI/ML or Generative AI solutions in production
- Strong ability to translate business problems into technical solutions
- Experience with cloud platforms and modern engineering ecosystems (e.g. AWS, CI/CD, containers)
- Understanding of AI system design, evaluation, and operational practices (e.g. LLMOps)
- Experience in regulated or data-driven environments
