Job Description
Energetics is a leading U.S. energy and management consultancy, with over 40 years of experience working with government and commercial clients to solve complex energy and technology challenges from inception to deployment and beyond. Our services include strategic planning and technology roadmap development, energy analysis and modeling, strategic outreach and communication, metrics and program evaluation, market and technology impact assessment, and program management for technology deployment. We apply these services across multiple areas of clean energy, including energy efficiency and energy management, manufacturing technologies, renewable energy and hydrogen/fuel cells, advanced transportation, climate resilience and sustainability, critical infrastructure resilience, and grid modernization.
Energetics is seeking an engineer/scientist/analyst with expertise in environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) along with excellent communication skills. The ideal candidate will have strong interests in sustainability in the context of manufacturing operations and supply chains and will feel comfortable leading and contributing to analytical efforts.
This position can be based in our DC, MD, NY, CO or CA office, or as a remote telework position. Limited travel will be required for this position.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supporting and advising government clients with programmatic analysis, program/project management, and strategic planning.

Assess potential environmental impacts of manufacturing technologies and manufactured products by applying a range of LCA and other systems-based methodologies (e.g., attributional, consequential, benchmarking, and input/output techniques).

Analyze emerging industrial technologies for their economic viability and their market readiness using TEA methods and other cost analyses (eg. Determine CAPEX and OPEX, NPV, ROI, IRR, minimum selling prices, etc.).

Perform assessments of research portfolios and individual R&D projects, including market and technology assessments and energy, environmental, and economic benefits analyses.

Support clients with programmatic analysis and strategic planning.

Liaison between scientists at universities/laboratories and government decision-makers to assist in distilling key technical results and impacts from R&D.

Synthesize and clearly communicate key results of analyses to colleagues and clients at all levels via formal and informal presentations and written technical communications (reports, white papers, fact sheets, briefings, journal articles, etc.).

Work closely with co-workers and clients in a fast-paced and collaborative team environment (diligent and responsive contributor).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

M.S. or Ph.D. degree in engineering, environmental science, or a related field. Candidates with a B.S. degree will be considered if they can demonstrate professional-level LCA expertise through technical publications or equivalent deliverables.

A minimum of 2-3 years’ relevant experience.
-
Experience in the use of LCA and other systems-level environmental impact analysis techniques to answer applied research or practical questions.

Experience in TEA and other cost analysis techniques to determine key economic indicators for new R&D investments, technology acquisitions, and/or new equipment projects.

Interest in manufacturing energy efficiency, decarbonization, and/or clean energy technologies.

Excellent communication skills, including strong technical writing skills and an ability to tailor written and verbal communications for technical and non-technical audiences.

Proficient in Microsoft Office; advanced analytical and Excel skills.

Demonstrated ability to excel when working on self-managed tasks and as a member of a team.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Project and/or program management experience.

Model and tool development experience.

Proficient in programming languages, Python, C#, C++, etc.

Contract and task management activities and tracking

Ph.D. degree in engineering, environmental science, or a related field. Preferred degree fields include mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, environmental engineering, materials science, and natural sciences. Strong mathematical skills are expected for this position.

Technical publications in environmental life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, energy systems modeling, and/or technology development related to clean energy manufacturing.

Interest and/or experience in communicating technical concepts to non-experts, including development of training and educational materials about LCA, TEA, and other technical topics (e.g., for purposes of workforce development) is a plus.
