Description of role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic Manager to lead the Laser Additive Manufacturing (LAM) Section here at TWI. You will work with colleagues to solve challenging engineering issues for our Industrial Members, advising on and using techniques for surfacing, coating, repair and open architecture additive manufacture, such as directed energy deposition (DED) with powder or wire and extremely high-speed laser application (EHLA) of coatings.

You will report to the Group Manager, Delivery, Advanced Manufacturing Technologies. The primary function of this role is operational management of LAM, but you will also play a significant role in leadership of the TWI Rotherham site which also houses other technology delivery team and support functions. The LAM team currently has 7 Engineering and Technician staff with aspirations for growth. The main responsibilities of the role are:

  • To develop and grow a motivated team with world-class technical skills and an entrepreneurial approach to business development.
  • To meet the Section’s planned targets for order generation (a balance of predominantly single client and joint industry projects with some government part-funded collaboratives).
  • Delivery to time, quality and budget of those projects.
  • To contribute towards development of the LAM technology strategy in alignment with, and to help inform, the TWI technology roadmap.
  • To implement and promote systems to ensure compliance with corporate policy and best practice, in particular in the areas of quality assurance and health, safety and the environment.
  • To manage workflow efficiently in the team.
  • To actively promote collaboration with other Sections and functions.
  • To advise on and recommend appropriate project, equipment and other investments.
  • To advise the Group Manager on financial, operational and policy matters.
  • To develop plans for continuous improvement of the services offered by LAM, in agreement with the Group Manager and your peers.
  • To develop project management excellence within the team from proposal creation and cost estimation through to experimental programme delivery, change control and reporting.

You will have a degree or PhD in engineering or physical sciences, or a related discipline. You will hold or be working towards membership of a relevant professional institute and Chartered Engineer/Manager status. Experience of project management, technology delivery and business development, together with an aptitude for people management and leadership are essential, as are effective communication skills.

Why join the Laser Additive Manufacturing team at TWI?

You will be joining one of the world’s foremost independent research and technology organisations, specialising in all aspects of welding, joining, surface engineering, inspection and whole-life integrity management. We are a membership-based organisation, supporting both individuals and companies alike, and exist to provide authoritative and impartial expert advice and demonstrable solutions in engineering, materials and joining technologies.

The team supports a diverse range of industrial clients with the challenges they face and complements the work of many of the other teams at TWI and in the wider research community. The team is nationally and internationally leading in the technologies they work with. The team has a UK and global client base spanning a broad range of industrial sectors, including aerospace, power generation, hydrogen, transport and defence.

From day one, you will contribute to solving real-world engineering problems for our clients and will rapidly gain experience in a broad range of additive and related disciplines by joining a growing team with over 85 years of combined experience in coating and additive builds. Some of our key facilities include coupon and metre-scale EHLA (up to 11kW) and DED (up to 3kW) machines, hot-wire laser system, use of Siemens NX, a range of beam and powder quality assurance tools and support laboratory facilities.
