Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Under the supervision of a licensed counselor or qualified exempt professional, provide substance abuse counseling services as defined in the 12 core functions as stated in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 148C, subdivision 9. The 12 core functions include screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling (group, individual and family), case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports, recordkeeping, and consultation with other professionals regarding client treatment and services.
• Follow and support the Center’s philosophy, policies, procedures, and job responsibilities.
• Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with referral sources and community agencies.
• Under the supervision of a licensed counselor or qualified exempt professional, meet with families to identify the need for services and make appropriate referrals.
• Participate in meetings – team staffing, staff meetings, and consultations.
• Under the supervision of a licensed counselor or qualified exempt professional, learn how to maintain records according to the Center’s policies and procedures.
• Work as an active and effective treatment team member.
• Demonstrate interest and willingness in increasing skills and knowledge regarding substance abuse and participate in activities that advance the field of substance abuse treatment.
• Maintain a professional demeanor with the agency and the community.
• May participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance treatment skills.
• May assist in the training of paraprofessionals in performance of clinical duties.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must be a student be enrolled in an alcohol & drug counselor education program at an accredited school or educational program.
o Must be in practicum portion of education and approved by their program instructor to begin internship
o Students from other disciplines other than alcohol and drug counseling must contact their licensor to apply for a variance that expands the definition of “student intern” to include the other disciplines, with the provision that specific conditions are met.
• Must have or obtain CPR & First Aid certification or obtain before direct patient contact.
• Must pass background studies issued by the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
• Must have or complete within 6 months of hire 12 hours of Co-occurring Disorders training.
Degree of Authority
Perform duties under direct supervision of the Treatment Director and Center policies and procedures.

Physical Demands
Limited physical effort is required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, listen, stand, walk, use hands to handle, grab, and feel, to taste and smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This individual must be able to read, write and comprehend.
Work Environment
This individual’s work environment is normally performed in a typical office setting. The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. This individual may rarely be exposed to blood or body fluids. The noise level is generally quiet to moderate.
This position is designated as in-person. The Center reserves the right to modify the work arrangement based on operational needs, patient requirements, and performance considerations.
Rate of Pay: $17/hour

Skills Required

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be enrolled in an alcohol and drug counselor education program at an accredited school or educational program
  • Must be in the practicum portion of the education program and approved by the program instructor to begin the internship
  • Students from other disciplines must obtain an applicable licensure variance before serving as an intern
  • Must have or obtain CPR and First Aid certification before direct patient contact
  • Must pass background studies issued by the Minnesota Department of Human Services
  • Must have or complete 12 hours of Co-occurring Disorders training within six months of hire
