Compensation: $40.68 to $59.37 per hour (Exact rate is determined on a case-by-case basis commensurate with experience level, as well as education and certifications pertaining to each position which may be above the listed job requirements.)

The Lactation Consultant is responsible for the overall coordination, planning and management of breastfeeding. You will be actively promoting breastfeeding and assisting mothers in reaching their own goals for breastfeeding. Additionally, you will serve as the consultant for the Women’s and Children’s Service regarding breastfeeding issues. The Lactation Consultant participates in Quality Improvement and research processes which result in the improvement of clinical intervention. How You Will Fulfill Your Potential (Responsibilities)
Plans, oversees and coordinates family and staff breastfeeding education activities:
Develops and implements standards of care and guidelines for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the organization where they might be served (ED, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Employee Health, etc.)
Provides and co-ordinates education to all patients who require breastfeeding information in accordance with current research literature and national standards of care.
Implements and maintains a reference library of breastfeeding materials appropriate for both health care providers and mothers interested in learning more about lactation.
Responsible for maintaining and updating files in appropriate locations of Journal articles and obtaining references that include the latest information on lactation in a variety of contexts and circumstances.
Provides antepartum, intrapartum and post partum classes on breastfeeding, breast care, and related topics to inpatients and/or outpatients in a group or 1 to 1.
Accepts consults for the education of patients and family members in the inpatient or outpatient setting.
Evaluates equipment related to breastfeeding and maintains the breastfeeding room.
Conducts bedside lactation rounds daily.
Responsible for coordinating staff competency activities and documentation of activities in Inservice Book
Serves as a Consultant for the Women’s and Children’s Service regarding breastfeeding issues:
Maintains a telephone line to provide contact with patients who require assistance or those referred for outpatient assistance.
Establishes and maintains a follow-up system of continuing care for mothers and their infant first seen in hospital (i.e., through telephone, postcards, letters, visits).
Develops a documentation record to track patient progress/concerns.
Communicates with physicians regarding patient condition and disposition and documents events appropriately.
Network on Statewide basis – NENY Perinatal Form sub group for Lactation
Participates in Quality Improvement and research processes:
Identifies problems, designs projects, collects data, analyzes data, tracks workload and processes results.
Applies generated information to health care practice.
Conducts annual audits to determine breastfeeding initiation and continuations rates and the effects of change in protocols
Evaluates facility for breastfeeding friendly activities.
Uses the nursing process to assist patients with breastfeeding issues:
Independently assesses patient’s breastfeeding condition and uses judgment to determine health care needs and appropriate action to be taken.
Recognizes and responds appropriately to deviation from normal.
Makes decisions and develops Care Plan based on interpretation of data and physical exam.
What You Bring (Qualifications)
International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required.
NYS RN license preferred. If not licensed, must have 5 years of experience as an IBCLC.
Professional knowledge of the breastfeeding process, antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum health care and psychosocial issues.
Knowledge of premature infants and from newborns to toddlers.
Skills Required
- International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification
- New York State Registered Nurse license
- Five years of experience as an IBCLC if not licensed as an RN
- Professional knowledge of breastfeeding, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum healthcare and psychosocial issues
- Knowledge of premature infants and patients from newborns through toddlers
