The Anatomic Pathology Sendouts Lab Support Assistant at BIDMC supports the coordination and processing of sendout testing for surgical pathology and oncology specimens across the health system. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate specimen handling, complete documentation in Epic, and timely submission to external reference laboratories in alignment with BIDMC workflows and policies.
Working closely with Pathologists and clinical teams, this position supports high-volume, time-sensitive testing, including specialized oncology assays. The role also partners with affiliate hospitals to coordinate sendout testing, ensuring consistency in processes and communication across sites.
The Lab Support Assistant plays a critical role in maintaining turnaround times, supporting quality and compliance standards, and ensuring a seamless sendout process that directly impacts patient care.
This role requires strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, with a direct impact on turnaround times and patient care.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Enters specimen demographics and test orders into the computer. Adds tests, when requested , to the appropriate specimen type. Identifies and labels specimens according to protocol. Packages specimens safely for transport. Appropriately handles specimens upon arrival at the laboratory. Processes both routine and STAT specimens, according to protocol.
  2. Processes and aliquots specimens to meet service goals. Stores specimens in the appropriate location and maintains the integrity of the specimens at all times. Retrieves specimens for add on. Identifies, labels and processes specimens for testing, while following all standard operating and safety procedures.
  3. Answers the telephone promptly and courteously.
  4. Maintains a clean and well-stocked work area.
Required Qualifications:
  1. High School diploma or GED required .
  2. 0-1 years related work experience required.
  3. Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Laboratory experience.
Competencies:
  1. Written Communications: Ability to read, and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with patients, families and other medical center staff; and respond to basic questions.
  2. Oral Communications: Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions.
  3. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations. Specialized knowledge not required.
  4. Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
  5. Customer Service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.

Physical Nature of the Job:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.

Pay Range:

$20.90 - $28.13

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.  Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
