QUALIFICATIONS

License /Certification
Required: CA State Phlebotomy I or II certification
Education
Required: High School Diploma
Preferred: Some college coursework
Experience
Required: One year Lab experience
Preferred:

One year of experience in a clinical lab leadership/oversight role (e.g. Team Lead or Supervisor) in an acute care hospital setting.

Experience/knowledge with reference lab testing.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Effective communication, leadership, interpersonal and public relations skills.
Able to work variable shifts, including weekends and holidays, as needed.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential
Consistently operates as a productive member of a fully supportive and cooperative service department. Understands the importance of customer service, readily identifies departmental customers and meets their needs in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner. Constantly strives to enhance and add value to individual and departmental efforts through increased efficiency, productivity and quality.
Assists the Laboratory Support Services Manager in the development, coordination and oversight of all inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy and sample processing functions, including sendout testing. Assists with the evaluation and implementation of new products, equipment, facilities, policies and procedures.
Assists the Manager in developing and providing employee work schedules. Organizes workload and staffing- including calling in additional staff when needed, to assure maximum efficiency and prompt turnaround times.
Personally provides coverage to all shifts and areas when/as needed, including: Team Leads, Phlebotomists, Lab Aides and other Coordinators. Authorizes, or utilizes, overtime only when there is an urgent, well-documented, need. Leads by example.
Actively works under the direction of the Lab Support Services Manager and/or other Lab management to meet, or exceed, productivity, employee satisfaction and quality improvement goals and metrics. Prioritizes own projects and workload and serves as a reference for staff. Maintains continued competence of technical skills and professional image.
Identifies problems and pursues opportunities for improvement using creativity and innovation and recommends changes to management. Promotes teamwork in problem-solving by providing co-workers with a feeling of ownership and recognition of their proposals. Knows how to persist without alienating anyone to find a solution that is in the best interests of all parties within the organization. Assists the Manager in the resolution of customer complaints within 48 hrs.
Assists the Manager and Lab Educator to ensure all mandatory orientation, training, tests, continuing education, documentation and certifications are up-to-date and compliance and operational deadlines are met.
Recommends updates to job descriptions and standards of performance. Assists in interviewing and hiring competent staff. Contributes to staff performance evaluations.
Able to communicate effectively with patients, nurses, physicians and physicians’ office and Kaweah Health staff. Maintains good working relationships and cooperation with other departments and exhibits excellent phone skills.
Continually updates and maintains expertise in all sendout processing functions. Assists with the proper ordering, processing, billing and reconciling of invoices from tests referred to outside laboratories.
Assists with Public Relations and promotional activities.
Addendum (essential for specific dept)
If assigned to in-patient: assists in providing lab supplies to the nursing units. Coordinates the activities of all in-patient services and provides backup to the Outpatient Coordinator and staff members as needed.
If assigned to out-patient: coordinates the activities of the outpatient and referral testing (sendouts) services. Balances workload, staffing, and resources (e.g. couriers) to obtain the highest quality results. Recommends updates to written procedures of the Processing/Sendout department and Patient Services Centers (PSCs). Assists in the training of staff and medical offices in the proper use of medical justification and properly inform patients when lab services are not covered, i.e. ABN documentation. Assists with scanning results, troubleshooting billing and resolving specimen issues. Provides backup to the Inpatient Coordinators and staff members as needed. Assists Lab management to improve, expand and promote outpatient services, including the opening of new PSCs and the training of new personnel.
If assigned to administrative support: assists in the resolution of billing issues and oversight of the manual billing and exception process (e.g. EBEW, CEWL). Assists with policy and procedure system management. Manages the materials handling functions for the department- including oversight of the warehouse. Responsible for the initial handling and processing of Proficiency Testing samples. Assists the Director with budget analysis specifically as it pertains to GL expense reports. Performs other administrative duties as determined by the Lab Director and/or Lab Manager.

Pay Range

$26.82 -$40.23
