The Lab Ops Specialist is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the lab. This includes hands-on equipment and consumable maintenance, coordinating technical services provided by vendors, managing the lifecycle of clinical samples, and serving as a primary responder for facility and storage alarms etc.
Essential Functions of the job:
Equipment Maintenance & Asset Management
Maintain the Equipment Master List and ensure all assets are properly tagged and tracked.
Troubleshoot minor technical issues before escalating to vendor support.
Vendor & Facility Coordination
Serve as the primary Point of Contact (POC) for external service providers and facility management.
Schedule and oversee preventative maintenance (PM) and emergency repairs to minimize instrument downtime.
Sample Receiving, Inventory & Management
Manage the end-to-end sample chain of custody, from initial intake/accessioning to long-term storage or disposal.
Verify sample integrity upon arrival (e.g., temperature logs, manifest accuracy, tube integrity).
Maintain a digital inventory system (LIMS) to track sample locations.
Lab Supplies & Inventory
Monitor levels of common lab consumables and reagents to prevent stock-outs.
Coordinate the procurement process, including generating purchase orders and reconciling packing slips.
Emergency Response & Resolution
Serve as primary contact for 24/7 emergency alarm monitoring for key equipment.
Respond to and resolve excursions related to freezers, incubators, and power outages.
Author Deviation or Incident Reports when environmental parameters fall outside of specified ranges.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory responsibility is required for this role.
Computer Skills:
Proficiency in general software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, Zoom, Teams as well as specialized laboratory systems, e.g. LIMS, ELN, EMS
Other Qualifications:
3+ years’ experience in a clinical biomarker/bioanalytical lab, core facility, or biotech operations environment.
Experience supporting operational planning, task tracking, and execution across multiple initiatives in a lab or technical environment.
Familiarity with GxP/CLIA/CAP regulations and experience using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), Equipment Management System (EMS) and/or Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) is a strong plus.
Proven experience adhering to Good Documentation Practices (GDP) in a regulated environment.
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to serve as a liaison between scientific staff, facility engineers, and external vendors.
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and handle cryogenics (LN2) safely.
