Position Information
Position Overview
The Knowledge Architect is responsible for the structural design, technical governance, and AI-enhanced evolution of HealthStream’s competency-based knowledge system. This role operates at the intersection of knowledge engineering, data architecture, and applied artificial intelligence—owning the foundational systems that organize, surface, and deliver clinical and professional knowledge across HealthStream’s product ecosystem.
The Knowledge Architect defines how knowledge is structured, classified, stored, and accessed—and leads the technical effort to integrate AI-enhanced capabilities that improve the scale, accuracy, and intelligence of that system. This includes designing taxonomies, governing metadata standards, evaluating and implementing AI/ML techniques such as large language models and semantic search, and partnering with engineering teams to build robust, API-driven knowledge infrastructure.
This role requires expertise in information architecture, knowledge representation, and modern AI tooling. The candidate must bring rigor and systems thinking to complex knowledge modeling challenges while remaining engaged with the broader product and clinical goals the knowledge system is built to serve.
Approximately 10–15% travel is required to support partner engagements, attend workshops and industry conferences, and collaborate with offsite colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for adhering to all HealthStream security policies, procedures, and assigned training.
- Assist in designing the architecture of HealthStream’s competency-based knowledge system, including taxonomies, ontologies, metadata schemas, and classification frameworks.
- Lead the technical integration of AI/ML capabilities including large language models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic search, and NLP pipelines to enhance knowledge discovery, delivery, and maintenance.
- Define and enforce data quality, governance, and compliance standards for knowledge content, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and auditability across the system.
- Design and maintain enterprise APIs that expose knowledge services to internal products and external integrations, collaborating closely with engineering on implementation and versioning.
- Evaluate emerging AI technologies and knowledge engineering methodologies; develop and maintain a roadmap for the evolution of the knowledge system.
- Partner with product management, clinical subject matter experts, and data engineering teams to ensure the knowledge architecture reflects the competency frameworks and clinical content needs of its customers.
- Build and maintain tooling for knowledge ingestion, transformation, indexing, and cataloging—supporting both automated pipelines and human curation workflows.
- Develop evaluation frameworks and quality metrics to measure the effectiveness, coverage, and clinical accuracy of AI-generated and curated knowledge outputs.
- Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, API specifications, and AI model behavior guidelines.
- Guide and mentor cross-functional teams on knowledge architecture principles, AI integration best practices, and system design decisions.
- Identify, resolve, and monitor technical issues within the knowledge system in collaboration with engineering, product, and client services teams.
- Drive ecosystem value by ensuring the knowledge architecture supports integration across HealthStream product lines and third-party platforms.
Requirements

- Experience designing and governing enterprise APIs and metadata-driven systems strongly preferred
Qualifications
- Ability to model and represent knowledge structures, including hierarchical classification systems
- Proficiency with AI/ML tooling and frameworks
- Proficiency with technical documentation and diagramming tools
- Ability to translate complex architectural decisions into clear guidance for product, engineering, and clinical stakeholders
- Ownership mentality—willing to lead through ambiguity and take accountability for system quality and outcomes
- Intellectual curiosity and openness to evolving methodologies in AI and knowledge engineering
- Establishes high level of credibility and trust internally through demonstrated expertise and sound judgment
- Works effectively within a matrixed, cross-functional organization—collaborating across product, engineering, clinical, and data teams
- Motivates and guides both direct reports and non-direct collaborators toward shared technical and organizational goals
- Influences architectural and product decisions across functional areas without relying on formal authority
- Demonstrates systems-level critical thinking—capable of modeling complex interdependencies and anticipating downstream effects of architectural choices
- Possesses strong communication and active listening skills; comfortable presenting technical concepts to clinical and executive audiences
- Responds to technical setbacks and evolving requirements with a constructive, solution-focused approach
