About Farm to Feed
Farm to Feed is a Kenyan agri-tech startup dedicated to reducing food loss and waste by creating a market for farmers’ full harvest. Founded in April 2020 as a COVID-19 relief initiative, it has evolved into a scalable model that connects smallholder farmers with buyers, ensuring that also edible but cosmetically imperfect fruits and vegetables reach consumers instead of going to waste.
Farm to Feed is building the digital backbone for efficient, transparent supply chains in Kenya, connecting suppliers and producers to commercial kitchens and institutional buyers through one integrated platform. Our purpose-built ERP powers procurement, real-time inventory, receiving, dispatch, pricing and finance, working hand-in-hand with our B2B e-commerce and supplier mobile app to reduce manual work, improve fulfilment performance, and strengthen traceability and data quality from sourcing to delivery across multiple product categories. We are a practical, execution-driven team that ships what moves the needle in operations and customer experience, using data to learn fast and scale what works.
Role Summary
We're looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join the team building and running Farm to Feed's production systems — a Laravel ERP, a farmer mobile app, and a B2B ordering shop, all on AWS. You'll ship real features into systems used daily by farmers and buyers, working closely with senior engineers across backend, integrations, and (as you grow) platform/DevOps work.
What You’ll Do
Core Development
- Develop and maintain features across the Laravel ERP and B2B shop — APIs, business logic, and integrations
- Write clean, tested PHP/Laravel code and follow our Git branching and code review workflow
- Work with PostgreSQL — schema changes, migrations, and query optimisation for production workloads
Operations & Integrations
- Debug and resolve production issues, including reading logs and working with senior engineers on root-cause fixes
- Contribute to integrations such as our QuickBooks Online sync and WhatsApp ordering bot as needed
- Support deployments on our AWS/Laravel Forge infrastructure and follow CI/CD practices (GitHub Actions)
Quality & Collaboration
- Write and maintain automated tests to protect existing functionality as the codebase grows
- Participate in sprint planning, stand-ups, and code reviews as part of a small, cross-functional engineering team
What Success Looks Like (Sample KPIs)
- Consistent, on-time delivery of assigned sprint tickets with minimal rework post-review
- Reduction in recurring production bugs within owned modules over rolling quarters
- Test coverage maintained or improved on features touched
- Positive peer feedback on code review turnaround and quality
Requirements
- Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrable experience
- 0–2 years of professional experience with PHP and Laravel (or strong personal/academic project experience)
- Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL — we run PostgreSQL in production
- Comfortable with Git-based collaborative workflows (branching, pull requests, code review)
- Basic understanding of REST API design and consumption
- Ability to debug methodically and communicate blockers early
- Comfortable working in a small team where you'll touch multiple parts of the stack
Nice to Have
- Exposure to AWS (EC2, RDS, S3) or Laravel Forge-managed hosting
- Familiarity with Docker and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions)
- Basic JavaScript/frontend experience
- Exposure to event-driven architecture (queues, Kafka/RabbitMQ) or third-party API integrations (e.g. accounting systems)
- Interest in agri-tech, logistics, or social-impact-driven products
Reporting Line & Working Style
This role reports to the Head of Technology and works closely with senior engineers across the Laravel ERP, mobile app, and B2B shop. The role is hybrid, based out of Farm to Feed's Nairobi offices at Tilisi PLC Developments, Limuru, with flexibility for remote work in coordination with the engineering team.
Skills Required
- Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent demonstrable experience
- 0-2 years professional experience with PHP and Laravel (or strong personal/academic project experience)
- Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL (PostgreSQL)
- Comfortable with Git-based collaborative workflows (branching, pull requests, code review)
