The Multi-Domain Solutions (MDS) division at Leidos is seeking a Junior Mechanical Engineer who will support the planning, design, and analysis of mechanical systems—primarily Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)—for mission-critical operations in government, commercial, and institutional facilities. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, this role involves assisting with system layout, equipment selection, energy modeling, and construction documentation. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, is eager to grow through mentorship, and is committed to delivering energy-efficient, reliable, and code-compliant designs.
Primary Responsibilities:
Assist in the design and layout of HVAC systems, including ductwork, piping, ventilation, and equipment selection for 24x7 mission-critical environments.
Prepare, revise, and maintain construction drawings and specifications using AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or similar design software.
Support mechanical system load calculations, energy modeling, and system sizing using tools such as Trace 700, HAP, or eQUEST.
Participate in field surveys, site investigations, and facility condition assessments.
Assist with commissioning, testing, and balancing of mechanical systems to ensure performance and compliance.
Review submittals, respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), and support construction administration activities.
Ensure designs and documentation meet applicable building codes and standards including ASHRAE, NFPA, IBC, IMC, and LEED.
Maintain organized engineering documentation including reports, technical memos, and as-built drawings.
Gain hands-on experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) used for centralized control of HVAC, lighting, and life safety systems.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical, architectural, and structural disciplines.
Basic Qualifications
TS/SCI w/ Poly Clearance is required
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
2–4 years of relevant engineering experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or less than 2 years with a Master’s degree.
Working knowledge of static and dynamic analysis techniques for mechanical systems and equipment.
Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for mechanical design and drafting.
Understanding of design specifications, dimensioning, and documentation standards.
Experience supporting prototype fabrication, design testing, and feasibility studies.
Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams and communicate technical concepts clearly.
Familiarity with mechanical engineering fundamentals such as thermal analysis, hardware design, and product development.
Strong organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Experience with SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, or other FEA/thermal analysis tools.
Hands-on experience in prototyping and iterative product development.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to moderately complex engineering projects independently.
Familiarity with project management tools and principles, especially in product development settings.
Knowledge of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability (DFM) best practices.
Exposure to hardware design in regulated environments (e.g., aerospace, defense, medical).
Ability to apply engineering standards and industry best practices in documentation and design.

Pay Range:Pay Range $67,600.00 - $122,200.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary.
