The Role

About Alethea:

Founded in 2019, Alethea is a tech company that detects and mitigates instances of disinformation and social media manipulation to help clients navigate the new digital reality. We protect clients from the threat of disinformation that targets brands, reputations, employee safety, or financial bottom lines through our industry-leading investigation and remediation services.

Position Summary:

Are you a recent college graduate with a passion for analysis and a keen interest in countering the effects of disinformation? Alethea is looking for a Junior Analyst to join our team analyzing social media manipulation and online threats targeting our clients.

In this entry-level role, you'll be working closely with experienced analysts, learning the ropes of daily monitoring, and conducting OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) investigations. Your primary responsibilities will include analyzing social media data and other online sources to identify potential risks. You'll also support the team by assisting in the creation of client briefing materials and contributing to the development of detailed reports.

We’re looking for someone who is highly curious, with initiative and energy.  You must be adaptable, creative, and eager to tackle a variety of challenges. As a valued member of our team, you’ll also have the opportunity to contribute ideas for improving our investigative and operational processes. This role focuses on threat analysis rather than policy development.

Bonus points if you have language skills in Hindi, Mandarin, Arabic, Portuguese, Indonesian, or Japanese, though it’s not a requirement.  If you’re ready to start your career in a dynamic and supportive environment, we’d love to hear from you!
Note: This role involves potential exposure to sensitive or disturbing content, including but not limited to graphic content, vulgar language, and violent threats.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyze social media data and other online sources to identify potential risks.
  • Provide written insights into social media conversations and investigate instances of manipulation and disinformation for a variety of industries.
  • Contributing to discussions identifying new trends in social media manipulation, disinformation, and online risk.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple investigative projects and tasks, ensuring the timely delivery of accurate and high-quality products.
  • Assist in the preparation of client-facing materials, and public-facing reports.
  • Support briefings led by Senior Analysts.
  • Support customer success and sales teams in developing materials for prospecting or client-facing briefings.

Skills/Experience:

  • Education: Recent college graduate with a strong GPA and a demonstrated interest in analysis, research, or investigation through internships or relevant work experience.
  • Research & Analysis: Proven skills in qualitative and quantitative research, with strong analytical abilities and experience in data analysis or modeling.
  • Report Writing: Excellent writing skills, with the ability to articulate complex and diverse findings clearly and concisely and the ability to work closely with editors to ensure a quality product
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively.
  • Growth Mindset: Adaptable and open to feedback, thriving in a fast-paced startup environment with frequent iterations and changes.
  • Problem Solving: Effective problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate and adapt to a dynamic business environment.
  • Team Orientation: Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and contribute to collective success.
  • EQ: High emotional intelligence, with the capability to anticipate needs and proactively develop solutions.
  • Integrity: Demonstrated integrity and discretion in handling sensitive/confidential information.
  • Curiosity and Drive: Independent thinker with a relentless curiosity and drive to achieve and excel.

Preferred Qualifications (Not required):

  • Prior work experience analyzing social media data.
  • Familiarity with the disinformation space (e.g. through academic research, training, or prior work experience)
  • A well-developed understanding—either through research, study, or experience—of one of the following areas: social media research, government and politics, disinformation, information operations, violent extremism, quantitative analysis, computer science, or cybersecurity.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary and stock options are negotiated based on experience.
  • Healthcare at the gold-tier level, dental, and vision is fully funded by the employer. 50% of dependent coverage is provided by the employer.  Additional benefits include employer provided life and AD&D insurance and an Employee Assistance Program with a variety of services, including generous Mental Wellbeing support.
  • Flexible vacation, sick leave, including office closure between Christmas and New Year’s, and extended holidays at Thanksgiving and the 4th of July.
  • Employees may also participate in an Employer sponsored 401k, after their 6-month anniversary, with a 3% match. Health Savings (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) are also offered.
  • Hybrid work environment, with 3 days per week required in office in Washington, D.C or New York.

The salary range for this entry level position is $50,000 to $70,000 per year, depending on the candidate’s skills, experience, and qualifications.   In addition to cash compensation, this role is eligible for a stock option grant. Further, we offer comprehensive benefits, including flexible PTO, health, dental and vision plans, and generous company holidays.  From time to time, employees may also be provided with opportunities for professional growth, development, and advancement.
