The Pro Tem Judge position is temporary, part-time, on-call, at-will. The person selected for this position will be appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the presiding judge of Peoria Court. A Pro Tem oversees misdemeanor and civil traffic cases filed with the Peoria Municipal Court and is responsible for applying relevant Supreme Court Rules, state statutes, City ordinances, and case law when presiding over trials to the court, trials to a jury, pre-trial conferences, arraignments, motions, and other hearings. A Pro Tem Judge is also responsible for imposing sentences appropriate to the offense and within the parameters allowed by law. Responsibilities include determining the conditions, which if met, will allow the defendant's release from police custody.
Knowledge of general law, court procedures and rules of evidence; the causes and corrective measures of antisocial behavior, principles of civil and criminal law, appeals and procedures; and methods of legal research. Proficient in interpreting and applying local, state, and federal laws, conducts the hearing of misdemeanor and civil matters and determines cases, which are in the jurisdiction of the Court. Ability to understand, use, and follow the Court’s electronic and digital formats.
