Since 2010, Storyful’s newsroom has been working at the intersection of social media, news and technology to help media partners tell the stories that matter most. As we expand the breadth and depth of our coverage, we are seeking a news journalist to join our editorial team.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in finding compelling stories via social media, and in producing original reporting that uses cutting-edge verification and open-source intelligence techniques. They will be at home in a fast-paced, video-led, breaking news environment, and able to serve a diverse set of media clients. They will want to work as part of a team, helping senior journalists and editors across a range of stories, from conflict zones to weather events and politics. As a journalist, the ideal candidate will be self-motivated and energetic, keen to learn open-source investigative and verification techniques.
Responsibilities will include:
- Hybrid working 12pm to 8pm UK hours
- Monitoring Storyful’s news feeds for emerging stories and undertaking advanced searches using our proprietary tools to discover original, eyewitness content
- Verifying images, posts and videos from the social web
- Writing clean, concise and accurate copy for publication on the Storyful Newswire and social platforms
- Contacting uploaders and sources involved in stories
- Working closely with newsroom clients and content creators
- Working to deadlines and targets
- Availability to work a flexible schedule in terms of days and hours, including weekends
- An ability to communicate clearly within the team, and also to clients and media partners
- Any other duties set out by editorial management team
Experience Required:
- Proven experience in open-source investigation/social media discovery and verification is an advantage but not essential
- Either a degree or qualification in journalism/communications, or one year of experience working as a journalist
- A self-starting journalist who is plugged into current events around the world
- A fluid, natural communicator who can write clean, simple copy for publication. All finalists will be administered a copy test.
- Understanding of social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, 4chan, etc.
- Excellent computer skills, including basic knowledge of spreadsheets and publishing within content management systems, is an advantage but not essential
- Foreign language skills are strongly favoured, but not required
- Video-editing skills are an advantage, but not mandatory
