Job Description

The Toronto Star is seeking a sharp, curious, and ambitious reporter to join our newsroom as a Business Journalist.  During this critical moment when economic, corporate and financial forces are reshaping the lives of Canadians, this reporter will be tasked with delivering urgent, revelatory and engaging journalism on business issues. Whether covering the dramatic spike in consumer prices, rapidly evolving changes in technology, labour trends or the decisions of powerful institutions, the successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to break news, expose trends, provide deep context, and tell human stories.  You’ll be expected to report, write and deliver authoritative coverage of breaking business news and trends on deadline. You’ll also be encouraged to pitch and develop enterprise stories that unpack the forces behind the headlines, offering new insight and compelling angles. This role requires attention to analytics and audience data, a sharp news sense, and a drive to file clean copy quickly and clearly

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a journalist with a strong track record of reporting and writing, ideally with a focus on business or financial news
  • Strong understanding of the economy, markets, corporate accountability, labour, personal finance, and public policy as they intersect with business
  • A digitally fluent storyteller who’s comfortable filing breaking news, creating videos, writing in alternative story forms and building enterprise features
  • Demonstrated ability to develop sources, land scoops, and ask tough questions
  • Excellent news judgment and the ability to distill complex topics into clear, compelling stories
  • Comfortable using access-to-information laws, financial documents, and public records to support reporting
  • Experience working in a fast-paced newsroom environment with a collaborative, team-first mindset
  • Familiarity with CP style and the ability to produce accurate, well-crafted copy under tight deadlines
  • Commitment to accuracy, fairness and storytelling that serves the public interest
