Summary Generated by Built In

Council Capital is a healthcare-focused private equity firm based in Nashville, Tennessee, managing over $350 million in committed capital.

We invest in lower middle market healthcare companies where we see the potential to scale purpose and performance. Our investments span control and minority positions in businesses with enterprise values between $10 million and $100 million.

What sets us apart is the Council Model—a proven framework that surrounds founders and leadership teams with a powerful combination of support: our CEO Council of seasoned operators, our Strategic Healthcare Investors who bring real-world insight and access, and our internal Value Creation Team, focused on enabling growth through talent, systems, and strategy.

At Council Capital, we’re not just backing companies—we’re helping build enduring businesses that improve lives and shape the future of healthcare.

ABOUT ALIVIA ANALYTICS

Alivia Analytics is a healthcare technology company serving commercial and government payers in the fraud, waste, and abuse space. Our platform delivers payment integrity outcomes for approximately two dozen payer customers. We are a private equity-backed SaaS business in a growth phase, which means the work is close to the customer and the impact of any single engineer is visible.

This role exists because we are moving platform maintenance and support work onshore. Two products—a case management application and an FWA detection application—carry real customer commitments and were built quickly by people who have since moved on. We are building an onshore team that can fix things properly, once, for every customer. You would be one of the first two engineers hired into that team.

THE ROLE

This is maintenance and support engineering on a mature platform, and we would rather be straightforward about that now than have you find out later. You will not be developing a new product from scratch. You will work across Java, Angular, and SQL to keep two products healthy for paying customers, deliver contractually committed features, and steadily bring a fragmented code base toward a shared build.

The work arrives in small pieces. Most tasks are two-hour to two-day jobs rather than two-week solo builds, and you will move between customers and products within the same week. As more of the platform transitions to Python over time, there will be opportunities to work on that for engineers who are interested.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

• Bug fixes, triage, and product support across both products, working from a single shared code base rather than customer-specific branches
• Contractually committed feature work and module refactors, including performance improvements on aging integrations
• Deployments alongside our SecOps team, including customer environment setup and upgrades
• Security and vulnerability remediation within contractual timelines
• SQL and data work across customer environments: queries, data structures, and migrating data between environments
• Participation in code review—both having your work reviewed and reviewing the work of others
• After ramp-up, improving how configuration, properties, and user-defined fields are handled in the legacy platform

What good looks like: Within roughly two months, you are handling straightforward support tickets and data work independently. By six months, you are supporting production environments, working at the same pace as the engineers already on the team, and the fixes you write reach every customer who needs them.

WHO THRIVES HERE

• You are a strong generalist engineer first and a Java engineer second. You have firm opinions about object-oriented design and do not define yourself by a single language or layer.
• You are pragmatic. On a platform we are maintaining rather than advancing, you can discern between a fix that should be quick and one that requires a proper solution.
• You context switch without dropping threads. Managing several small tasks at once is typical for the week.
• You take feedback on your code directly and without defensiveness. Our review culture is blunt, and work gets pushed back until it matches our team standards.
• You are resourceful in a code base with minimal documentation. You actively seek answers.
• You remain steady when a customer environment is down or a vulnerability must be patched urgently.
• You are a true teammate—you collaborate with product, project management, and QA, and do not work in isolation.

WHAT YOU BRING

• 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, including production Java
• Object-oriented Java in a deployed enterprise application, including J2EE-era patterns
• REST APIs and single-page applications—both developed and consumed
• SQL fluency: writing queries, working with data structures, and migrating data between environments (you do not need to be a DBA; we have DBAs)
• Experience with enterprise or SaaS products deployed to multiple external customers
• Experience adhering to enforced team standards in a code-review-gated environment
• Authorized to work in the United States and available during US business hours

Nice to Have

• Tomcat or comparable application server configuration

• Front-end capability in addition to backend work: modern framework plus TypeScript or JavaScript (we use Angular)
• Azure environment setup and deployment
• Snowflake
• CVE and security patch management
• Comfortable with AI-assisted development tools
• JSP exposure—useful context, but not a requirement for this role.

Council Capital and our portfolio companies are committed to building high-performing teams by hiring the best talent—period.

We believe in putting the right people in the right seats, regardless of background, and we’re always looking for individuals who bring fresh thinking, grit, and a drive to make a difference.

Thank you for considering a role with one of our companies. We’re excited to learn more about you.
