About the Role

Astroscale is seeking a Junior Cloud Architect to support, operate, and gradually help design our AWS cloud environment. This role is intended as a growth position for someone with strong AWS infrastructure fundamentals who wants to develop into a Cloud Architect. You will begin by learning and supporting the current AWS environment, handling day-to-day infrastructure work, contributing to architecture decisions under guidance, and progressively taking ownership of Terraform-based infrastructure as code. Over time, this position is expected to grow into a Cloud Architect role as technical ownership, architectural judgment, and business understanding mature.

Key Responsibilities

AWS Infrastructure & Operations

  • Learn, support, and operate the existing AWS environment, including EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, security groups, Route 53, VPN/connectivity, and related infrastructure services.
  • Assist with provisioning, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, patching, backup/restore, and operational maintenance of AWS-hosted infrastructure.
  • Help maintain infrastructure documentation, diagrams, runbooks, change records, and environment inventories so the AWS estate remains understandable and supportable.

Cloud Architecture Support

  • Support Cloud Architects and senior engineers in designing secure, resilient, high-performing, and cost-aware AWS solutions aligned with business and technical requirements.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, technical planning, proof-of-concepts, and migration activities, initially under guidance and with increasing ownership over time.
  • Review existing AWS implementations and help identify practical improvements for reliability, security, performance, maintainability, and cost optimization.

Terraform & Infrastructure as Code

  • Work with existing Terraform modules, state, variables, and deployment workflows to understand how the current AWS environment is provisioned and maintained.
  • Contribute Terraform changes under review, follow version-controlled infrastructure standards, and gradually take ownership of Terraform maintenance and improvements.
  • Support safe infrastructure change processes, including planning, peer review, testing, rollback planning, and documentation.
  • Use automation, scripting, and Git workflows to improve repeatability, reduce manual work, and strengthen infrastructure consistency.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • 2+ years in IT infrastructure, cloud operations, systems administration, DevOps, or a related technical role.
  • Hands-on familiarity with AWS core services such as EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, security groups, Route 53, CloudWatch, and basic networking concepts.
  • Foundational understanding of cloud architecture concepts, including availability, scalability, resilience, security, and cost awareness.
  • Basic experience with Infrastructure as Code, preferably Terraform; willingness and ability to grow into Terraform ownership.
  • Comfortable using Git and participating in reviewed change workflows such as pull requests or merge requests.
  • Ability to troubleshoot infrastructure issues methodically, read logs, follow runbooks, and document findings clearly.
  • Strong learning mindset, attention to detail, and willingness to take ownership of operational tasks while developing architectural capability.
  • Good documentation habits, including diagrams, SOPs, change notes, and environment inventories.
  • Language: Professional proficiency in either English or Japanese, written and verbal. Must also possess at least basic conversational skills in the other language, with a demonstrated passion and commitment to actively learning it.
  • Availability for planned weekend or late-night maintenance windows as needed.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, or active progress toward AWS certification.
  • Experience supporting Terraform in a team environment, including modules, remote state, provider versioning, and code review practices.
  • Exposure to AWS Well-Architected concepts, including secure, resilient, high-performing, and cost-optimized designs.
  • Experience with AWS networking, hybrid connectivity, VPNs, DNS, security groups, NACLs, or Transit Gateway.
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and operational tools such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Datadog, or equivalent.
  • Basic scripting experience with Bash, Python, or PowerShell for operational automation.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Japanese, written and verbal.
  • Interest in using AI/LLM tools to accelerate documentation, troubleshooting, and Infrastructure as Code workflows.
