Position Overview

The Amatriot Group is seeking a motivated IT Systems Administrator to support the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock in West Bethesda, Maryland. This position is part of a collaborative team of nine IT professionals responsible for maintaining and supporting mission-critical information systems that enable the Navy’s engineering, research, and development mission.

This role is ideal for an early- to mid-career IT professional with a strong foundation in systems administration, SQL databases, and PHP-based web applications who enjoys working in a customer-facing environment. The selected candidate will provide daily technical support to government personnel while administering servers, maintaining databases, troubleshooting enterprise applications, and ensuring the reliable operation of critical IT infrastructure.

The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as this position involves daily interaction with government customers, technical staff, and program stakeholders.

Key ResponsibilitiesSystems Administration and Infrastructure Support
  • Administer, maintain, and support Windows-based server and workstation environments supporting Navy engineering programs.
  • Install, configure, patch, and troubleshoot operating systems, enterprise software, and server applications.
  • Provide day-to-day systems administration for production, development, and test environments.
  • Monitor system performance, availability, and security to ensure reliable operation of mission-critical systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, database, and network-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Participate in system upgrades, infrastructure modernization efforts, and continuous process improvement initiatives.
Database and Application Support
  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot SQL databases, including writing and optimizing SQL queries, stored procedures, and database maintenance activities.
  • Support and maintain PHP-based web applications and internal business systems.
  • Perform routine application updates, configuration changes, and software deployments.
  • Assist with testing and validating new software releases prior to deployment.
User Support, Access Control, and Customer Service
  • Assist with user account management, permissions, Active Directory administration, and access control.
  • Interface directly with government customers to gather requirements, resolve technical issues, and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Collaborate closely with fellow system administrators, software developers, database administrators, and network engineers to support ongoing projects and operational requirements.
Security, Compliance, and Resilience
  • Support backup and disaster recovery processes to ensure data integrity and system resilience.
  • Coordinate with cybersecurity personnel to maintain compliance with DoD security requirements and STIG implementation.
  • Participate in vulnerability remediation and system hardening efforts.
Documentation and Asset Management
  • Document system configurations, operational procedures, technical issues, and resolutions.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of IT assets and system documentation.
QualificationsEducation
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Engineering, or another STEM-related discipline is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience
  • Experience administering Windows operating systems and enterprise IT environments.
  • Experience working with Microsoft SQL Server or other relational database management systems.
  • Experience writing SQL queries and performing database maintenance activities.
  • Working knowledge of PHP and supporting PHP-based web applications.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows Server administration.
  • Experience troubleshooting operating systems, software applications, and enterprise IT systems.
Skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work directly with customers in a professional, service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced technical environment.
Clearance
  • Active Secret security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CompTIA Security+ certification, or ability to obtain prior to start or shortly after hire.
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense or federal government IT environments.
  • Familiarity with Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and Windows domain administration.
  • Experience with IIS web server administration.
  • Knowledge of PowerShell or other scripting languages.
  • Familiarity with Linux administration.
  • Experience performing software installations, upgrades, and patch management.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity best practices, vulnerability management, and DoD RMF requirements.
  • Experience supporting virtualized environments using VMware or Hyper-V.
  • Familiarity with source control and software deployment processes.
  • Knowledge of backup technologies and disaster recovery procedures.
