The Role

Purpose

The Director of Data Engineering will lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company’s enterprise data infrastructure to support advanced analytics, AI, and machine learning initiatives. This role is responsible for architecting and managing a modern data warehouse, developing robust ETL pipelines, overseeing Master Data Management (MDM) with SAP integration (leveraging Syniti), and ensuring high-quality backend BI support. The Director will play a critical role in enabling data-driven decision-making and operational excellence across the organization.  This is a remote position based in India.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive data engineering strategy aligned with business objectives and the company’s data vision.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of a modern enterprise data warehouse to support analytics, AI, and ML workloads.
  • Architect and manage end-to-end ETL solutions, ensuring efficient, scalable, and reliable data integration from diverse sources.
  • Oversee Master Data Management (MDM) initiatives, including SAP integration using Syniti, to ensure data consistency, quality, and governance.
  • Collaborate with Data Science and Analytics teams to deliver robust data pipelines and infrastructure for AI/ML model development and deployment.
  • Provide backend BI support, ensuring data availability, performance, and reliability for reporting and analytics platforms (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
  • Establish and enforce data engineering best practices, standards, and documentation.
  • Partner with IT, business stakeholders, and external vendors to understand data needs and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data engineering, cloud platforms, and AI/ML enablement.
  • Mentor and develop a high-performing data engineering team.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field. A master's degree is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, economics, engineering, finance, computer science, or a related field.

Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in data engineering, data warehousing, and ETL development in large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Proven experience with modern data warehouse platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Azure Synapse, Google BigQuery, or similar).
  • Deep expertise in ETL tools and frameworks, data modeling, and data integration.
  • Hands-on experience with SAP data integration and MDM solutions
  • Strong background in supporting AI/ML initiatives, including building and optimizing data pipelines for advanced analytics.
  • Proficiency with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
  • Excellent leadership, project management, and communication skills.

  • Experience in fast-paced global multinational matrix organization

  • Fluent verbal and written communication in English
  • Hands-on and proactive; strong organizational skills
  • Results driven and service oriented to internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated history of consistent goal achievement in a highly competitive environment

Preferred Requirements

Education

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) or advanced degree in Computer Science

Experience

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Experience in Pharmaceutical, Medical Device or life science industry strongly preferred
