The ISP Engineer is responsible for projects and tasks related to the transport and central office engineering. This position includes responsibility for design, and planning for maintenance, improvements, capacity, and upgrades for the relevant systems. The ISP Engineer is responsible for executing projects to augment and enhance the network, maintenance, repair, additions, alterations, and general upkeep of headend, antennas, towers, and related equipment. Reception, processing, combining and transmission of standard analog and digital CATV services, high speed internet and telephony duties. Travel to company properties in other states is required.
Essential Job Functions:
Plans, designs, and coordinates complex network augments and rearrangements to the existing network.
Responsible for maintaining spares inventory, network redundancy and sufficient capacity in transport and access network systems
Responsible for working on central office facilities, utilities, infrastructure, and related systems
Provide technical assistance and support to other teams for major systems improvements.
Mentor coworkers in new technology
Responsible for network availability, capacity planning and reporting
Manage customer issues by setting expectations and meeting/exceeding those expectations to achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction
Create detailed engineering plans and drawings for transport/access networks and peripheral 3rd party touch points for Central Office, Hut and Cabinet environments.
Interpret general network diagrams and site survey information to determine placement of new equipment, parts required for installation, cables type and connections, power equipment needs.
Create engineering work packages including scope of work, material lists, provisioning details, installation details, network diagrams and installation notes.
Performs regular maintenance, repair, testing alignment, alterations and adjustment on all headend equipment including, but not limited to, processors, modulators, demodulators, encoders, decoders, satellite receivers, all types of switchers, fiber optic transmitters, fiber optic receivers, other fiber optic equipment, RF combining networks, digital headend equipment, telephony equipment, generators, air conditioning, power conditioning and other headend and plant equipment.
Performs headend alterations including design changes, service additions, service changes, channel rearrangements, equipment improvements and changes including air conditioning, power conditioning, standby generators, towers, antennas and satellite RX/TX stations.
Familiar with setup and operation of cable modem termination systems, cable modems, and basic networking equipment. Able to work closely with network engineers to facilitate proper operation, maintenance, and restoration of high-speed data network.
Knowledgeable on microwave transmitters-receivers, radio backhauls, and wireless HSD systems preferred.
Test and maintain backup powering systems- including generators, uninterruptible power supplies, and temporary feeds.
Setup and operate legacy headend equipment including but not limited to signal processors, modulators, demodulators, IRD's and IRT's
Install and align satellite dishes. Includes fine tuning of feedhorns and replacement of low noise block converters. May include multi-feed assemblies.
Install, maintain, and perform testing and required documentation of emergency alert systems.
Monitor video and audio quality of services delivered on the forward and reverse (analog – digital – IP)
Monitor Commercial Insertion equipment for performance as needed.
Perform daily check of RF Levels and Headend alignment.
Follows proper notification and planning process relating to Headend upgrades, maintenance repairs, system designs, and/or unscheduled outages.
Maintain, oversee, and file all FCC requirements, along ability to perform regular proof of performance and other headend and plant testing, documentation and reporting in accordance with FCC rules
Maintains through and current proficiency of FCC performance specifications, and can, without supervision, initiate and complete comprehensive testing including (but not limited to) all FCC required or recommended tests and measurements.
Ensures that the headend and all related equipment is properly maintained within these specifications at all times.
Participate in safety program and in ongoing development of company-wide policy.
Responsible for performing central office installation and repair work.
Work with customers with complex services, troubleshooting, and interoperability testing.
Participate in an on-call rotation
Must be able to work off shift hours.
Performs all other related duties as assigned by management. *

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of rural and competitive telephone operations and subscriber services preferred.
Experience with central office installation, maintenance, and repair work, DC power systems, SONET network systems, DSL and Fiber Access equipment, and DWDM, OTN, and Carrier Ethernet technologies
Experience with design, planning, documentation and maintenance of fiber and coaxial plant
Working knowledge of Ethernet, IP, FTTx, ATM, xDSL, T1/T3 or GR-303 required
Strong understanding of various engineering practices and procedures required.
Optical network installation and implementation experience required.
Knowledge of current architectures being deployed Metro Ethernet, xPON, DWDM
Strong knowledge of Adtran/Calix access and transport systems a plus
Knowledge of industry standards and best common procedures
Minimum four (4) years Headend Technician or electronics / network implementation experience.
Advanced knowledge of RF and IP technologies, HFC design, as well as optical test equipment (such as OTDR, Optical Spectrum Analyzer, Fiber Light Identifier, Optical Fiber Scope, Optical Power Meter, RF signal meter, and MPEG Analyzer).
Experience with Arris, Motorola, Cisco, or Harmonic satellite receivers preferred
Experience with Inca transcoders and RBG/Imagine BNP/MMC preferred
Knowledge of IPTV
Problem solving and network troubleshooting skills
Knowledge of AC and DC voltages in a Central Office environment
Ability to communicate with customers, co-workers, and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to pay close attention to detail and schedules.
Ability to effectively function as a team player.
Ability to work nights and weekends when required
Travel throughout Alabama offices frequently required
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Education and Experience:
Education: 2- or 4-year technical degree preferred, high school diploma required.
Experience: Minimum of (4) years of relevant Headend Technician or network implementation experience
