RH is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Iron Prepping Specialist to join our Dennis & Leen/Formations Workshop in Torrance, CA. This role plays an essential part in preparing iron components for finishing, ensuring surfaces are ready for the next stage of production. The Iron Prepping Specialist contributes to the creation of handcrafted furniture and architectural pieces that embody the artistry, precision, and quality synonymous with Dennis & Leen/Formations. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspect iron furniture components for defects, rust, or surface inconsistencies prior to finishing
- Clean and prepare metal surfaces using mechanical and chemical methods to ensure proper adhesion of water-based finishes
- Perform sanding, grinding, wire brushing, and other surface texturing techniques to replicate aged or antique effects
- Apply rust inhibitors, primers, or sealers as needed to protect and condition the metal
- Collaborate with finishers to understand specific finishing requirements and ensure optimal surface readiness
- Mask or protect areas not to be finished, ensuring clean transitions and defined finish boundaries
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to shop safety protocols and material handling standards
OUR REQUIREMENTS
- 3+ years of experience in metal preparation, fabrication, or furniture finishing
- Proficiency in sanding, grinding, wire brushing, and scuffing iron surfaces to create texture and promote finish adhesion
- Skilled in removing rust and contaminants using degreasers, solvents, and rust-removal agents
- Experience with hand tools, pneumatic grinders, wire wheels, and sandblasting equipment
- Understanding of how surface preparation impacts paint and stain adhesion and performance
- Knowledge of techniques for simulating aged textures and patinas through controlled surface wear and distressing
- Strong attention to detail, craftsmanship, and commitment to producing consistent, high-quality results
- Familiarity with antique-style furniture and traditional design aesthetics preferred
- Knowledge of iron alloys and their behavior under water-based finishes preferred
- Experience in high-end or custom furniture production preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Handles and moves iron furniture components weighing up to 75 lbs. regularly
- Performs detailed visual inspection and tactile surface analysis to ensure cleanliness and texture consistency
- Stands, bends, and operates grinding and sanding tools for extended periods in a workshop environment
- Works in areas with exposure to dust, noise, and finishing materials while adhering to safety and PPE standards
- Operates hand and power tools requiring dexterity, control, and sustained focus
