Purpose of Role

The Laboratory Quality Officer role is key in ensuring the delivery of high-quality support to the laboratory, operating within relevant guidelines, recommendations, and legislation. Reporting to the Quality Manager you will work closely with the Laboratory Management Team to effectively implement the requirements of ISO 15189:2022.  

Duration of Role

This is an internal secondment opportunity until 30 January 2027.

Key Responsibilities 

 

  • Ensuring constant compliance with the ISO 15189:2022 accredited Quality Management System (QMS)  
  • Establishing, updating and maintaining the QMS with guidance and approval from laboratory or quality management 
  • Updating Quality Indicators and KPI’s, reporting on performance, initiating investigations, and recognising areas for improvement. 
  • Providing reports to the Laboratory and Quality management teams on the performance of the Laboratory quality management system and suggest improvement actions 
  • Lead regular quality meetings with laboratory management ensuring appropriate actions and agreed timescales are set and documented as minutes. 
  • Contributing in
    laboratory team meetings on matters relating to Quality e.g. updates to policies and procedures or learning from incidents 
     
  • Ensure new laboratory staff complete their Quality and Health & Safety induction training in a timely manner, and records are updated accordingly 
  • Providing procedural guidance and quality training to laboratory staff, including the efficient and quick implementation of procedural changes. 
  • Acting as first point of call for laboratory staff for help and advice on matters of Quality 
  • Provide training to Laboratory staff for Quality related tasks, such as incident investigations, root cause analysis and audit. 
  • Identifying and documenting nonconformances to the quality system and initiating investigations 
  • Liaising and assisting the laboratory team to ensure nonconformances are investigated and actioned within a timely manner. 
  • Ensuring changes to processes or policies are effectively and efficiently communicated and implemented within the laboratory. 
  • Ensuring document control is maintained within the laboratory, particularly pertaining to, but not limited to, hard copy documentation. 
  • Assisting in the planning of and overseeing validation work and collaborating with technical staff.  
  • Ensure associated Validation and Verification documentation both in electronic and paper-based form are completed by the laboratory.  
  • Always ensuring that a high degree of accuracy and precision is applied to methods and procedures through incorporating and promoting good laboratory practice principles 
  • Oversee the internal audit process and external comparison programmes and ensure the laboratory completes them on time, maintains any records relating to the process and that NCs are raised and investigated in a timely manner. 
  • Performing risk assessments and internal audits as required.  
  • Provide training and guidance for laboratory staff who are assigned internal audits. 
  • Working in accordance with company and departmental policies, including (but not limited to confidentiality, data protection, code of conduct, and waste disposal

Qualifications




Essential

  • BSc in a scientific discipline 
  • Experience of working in a laboratory environment 

Desirable 

  • Quality or Health and Safety qualification 




Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Quality Management Systems and understanding of the requirements of ISO 15189:2022 
  • Health and Safety regulations 

Desirable 

  • Experience of regulatory inspections  
  • Laboratory experience  
  • Managing rotas 
  • Coordinating meetings  
  • Knowledge of data management laws and standards such as GDPR

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and/or data tracking tools (Google Sheets, Power BI, etc

    • Understanding of COSHH, risk assessments, and lab safety regulations.
