Internship in Technology Development for Biomolecular Structure and Function

About Prof. Robert Thorne’s Lab
Prof. Robert Thorne’s lab focuses on a range of biological, chemical, and materials physics problems related to understanding biomolecular structure and function. The group develops technologies for synchrotron X-ray and electron diffraction-based study of biomolecular systems and cryopreservation of biological samples. These methods and tools are used by structural biologists worldwide and have even been commercialized by Prof. Thorne’s company, MiTeGen.

Position Overview
We are currently accepting applications for internship positions focused on developing new technologies for probing biomolecular structure and advancing cryopreservation methods for biological samples in the lab of Prof. Robert Thorne at Cornell University. These positions are ideal for graduating seniors looking for employment for a year or two before pursuing other interests, for recent graduates with B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degrees, and for trailing partners in dual-career situations who have suitable skills.

What You Will Do
As an intern, your responsibilities may include:

  • CAD design, 3D printing, and machining

  • Parts sourcing and apparatus construction

  • Computer/microcontroller programming and interfacing

  • Conducting laboratory-based experiments and testing

  • X-ray data collection at Cornell’s synchrotron source

  • Modeling and analyzing data

  • Possible microfabrication using Cornell’s Nanofabrication Facility

The work involves skills that are commonly found in engineering and physical science graduates, but qualified candidates from all disciplines are welcome to apply.

Position Details

  • Start Date: Flexible between March and June 2025.

  • Term: Minimum 6 months with the potential to extend up to 2 years.
