As a UX/UI Front-End Engineer Intern at Nelnet, you'll gain hands-on experience maintaining the Unifi Design System's documentation site (unifi.nelnet.io) and help convert its content into machine-readable context for AI-assisted development tooling. You'll work alongside our team of engineers and designers to learn how a design system is maintained and documented at enterprise scale.Job Responsibilities
  • Help maintain content on the Unifi documentation site (unifi.nelnet.io), primarily updating existing documentation to align with the current state of the design system.

  • Assist in converting design and accessibility guidelines content into machine-readable formats to support AI-assisted development workflows.

  • Perform front-end maintenance work on the documentation site  (Angular).

  • Participate in code reviews and follow version control practices (Git).

EDUCATION:

Actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Web Development, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Coursework or personal project experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Angular required — this role involves maintenance work in an existing Angular codebase, not first exposure to the framework.

  • No professional/paid experience required.

COMPETENCIES – SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

  • Working proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Angular.

  • Interest in developer experience, technical documentation, and AI-assisted tooling.

  • Familiarity with Git/GitHub.

  • Strong written communication skills.

  • Comfortable asking questions and receiving feedback.

  • Basic understanding of, or interest in, web accessibility (WCAG) a plus.
