Mapping forms the core of Akamai's platform, managing global user traffic across 300,000 servers in thousands of locations. It uses numerous real-time software components and large datasets to optimize user interactions, ensuring top performance while balancing capacity and cost constraints.

As a participant in our program, you will gain valuable experience and contribute through meaningful project work. You will have the opportunity to join us for training, networking events, and engagements with company leadership. Our internships are open to students and graduates.

Partner with the best

In this role you'll work closely with engineers to develop specialized real-time components that are part of the Mapper system the core technology that backs Akamai's CDN. We are looking for an individual with good analytical skills, eager to develop robust and efficient back-end solutions following the best software development standards. In turn, this position represents a unique opportunity to learn how the Akamai platform is designed to meet goals of fault-tolerance and high scalability at global scale, how Akamai load balances Internet traffic, learn software development techniques and most importantly build solutions that create real value for the organization.

As a Contingent Worker Intern, you will be responsible for:

• Collaborating with Mapper engineers to design scalable, effective solutions.
• Building and maintain high-performance back-end services and system components.
• Owning quality end-to-end, ensuring every deliverable meets a high bar before reaching users.

Do what you love

To be successful in this role you will:

• Be enrolled in a Computer Science program or a related discipline
• Have a foundation in modern C++
• Be familiar with the Internet protocol suite and HTTP
• Communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally
• Be comfortable building and running software applications on Linux/Unix systems
• Have knowledge with data analysis using tools such as NumPy, Matplotlib, or Pandas.
• Be familiar with distributed systems concepts
• Be comfortable using AI coding tools while applying critical judgment to their output

Work in a way that works for you

Our 6-month intern program starts in July. The program requires you to be available 40 hours per week during summer months (July-September). We offer the opportunity to work part-time during the academic year (October-December).
