This summer internship is designed for students who are curious about how data, markets, and technology shape product decisions in a real‑world manufacturing environment.
The Product Strategy & Market Intelligence intern will support Hypertherm Associates' Product Center of Excellence by delivering actionable market and technology insights. This internship focuses on (1) mapping complex industrial ecosystems and purchasing dynamics and (2) assessing competitive and adjacent technologies to waterjet cutting solutions for displacement opportunities. Deliverables will include executive-ready market maps, competitive economics benchmarking, and a technology displacement whitepaper with strategic implications for portfolio investment and go-to-market decisions.
Key Projects & Deliverables:
Project 1: Industry Market Map (e.g., Energy)- Identify major manufacturers/OEMs and segmentation (by application, region, production model)
- Map ecosystem: customers, tier suppliers, service providers, integrators
- Document decision journey: spec-in drivers, qualification process, budget owners, buying criteria
- Create visuals: value chain map, stakeholder map, and decision flow
- Identify competing cutting technologies (direct and indirect substitutes)
- Compare economics (capex/opex), throughput, precision, material compatibility, maintenance, safety
- Assess software/workflow integration (CAD/CAM, nesting, automation, data connectivity)
- Map route-to-market: OEM vs integrator-led sales, channel partners, bundling patterns
- Synthesize implications: opportunity level by segment, where to invest/defend, positioning gaps
- 1–2 page executive summary + appendix of sources
- Market map visuals (ecosystem + buying process)
- Competitive benchmark tables (economics + performance)
- 10–15 page whitepaper (or 6–8 slide deck) with recommendations
- “So what” implications for portfolio strategy and GTM
- Pursuing a Master’s degree in Business, Marketing, Economics, Engineering, Analytics, or a related field (candidates in their third or fourth year of undergrad in a similar field will be also be considered with the below experience)
- Experience conducting research and analyzing data
- Market research and competitive analysis
- Data analysis (Excel, Power BI, Tableau, SQL, etc.)
- Strategic thinking and storytelling
- Cross-functional collaboration
- Comfort with technical products or industrial markets
