Why intern in Business Operations?

This is a great hands-on opportunity at a growing investment management company with affiliate and third-party assets under management. Interns will work across Business Operations, data, and technology initiatives, helping analyze processes, support reporting and data needs, and identify practical opportunities to improve efficiency, controls, and decision-making. This internship offers students a firsthand look at how business processes, data, and technology support investment management, with opportunities to collaborate across Business Operations, Portfolio Management, Trading, and IT through meaningful project work, networking, and a capstone presentation. Interns will also gain knowledge of fixed income, equity, derivative, and alternative assets with varying degrees of complexity.

About the internship

This is a 10-week experience designed to immerse interns in the buy-side investment management industry by working alongside one of HIMCO’s Business Operations teams. Assignments may include performance measurement and attribution, investment reporting, trade operations, data integrity, reconciliation and controls, valuations, or business process improvement. Interns may help document current-state processes, analyze data quality or reporting needs, support workflow improvement efforts, and contribute to initiatives that connect business requirements with technology-enabled solutions. Interns are offered development opportunities through mentoring, networking, business unit reviews, executive speakers, volunteering, and social events. Each intern’s contributions will culminate in a capstone project presentation to HIMCO senior leaders. Successful summer interns may be invited back for a full-time Business Operations position.

What are we looking for?

Our summer internship program is open to candidates pursuing a bachelor’s degree, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028. While no specific major is required, we are looking for highly motivated students with strong academic achievements, an interest in financial markets, and curiosity about how business, data, and technology intersect. We value candidates who bring fresh perspectives, ask thoughtful questions about how and why work is performed, and are comfortable proposing new ideas. Successful candidates will be interested in understanding existing processes, identifying potential improvements, and working collaboratively with business and technology partners to develop practical solutions. Candidate qualities we look for include:

• Curiosity, analytical thinking, and motivation to understand how business processes work and where they can be improved
• Strong academic achievement, related coursework, experience and/or interest in areas such as finance, economics, business, mathematics, computer science, engineering, data analytics, or business analysis
• Willingness to challenge assumptions, ask thoughtful questions, and identify more effective ways of working
• Interest in using data, reporting, automation, and technology concepts to solve business problems, improve processes, and support better decision-making
• Ability to collaborate with Business Operations teams, IT partners, Front Office and other technical stakeholders to translate business needs into practical solutions
• Strong attention to detail, initiative, time management, follow-through, clear communication, and comfort working in a collaborative environment with a proactive mindset.
• Interest in applying data and technology to improve business processes, reporting, controls, operational efficiency, and decision-making
• Familiarity with concepts such as data analysis, visualization, reporting, database design, business analysis, workflow automation, or generative AI
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; exposure to tools such as Excel, Power BI, Power Automate, SQL, Python, or Excel VBA is a plus

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
