The Intern is utilized in various departments. ARUP's culture is one of caring for both the patient and its employees.
This internship will involve data science evaluation of an agenetic LLM powered query of laboratory data along with preliminary data analysis under the supervision of pathologists in the applied artificial intelligence group (Dirs: David Ng, MD, and Nick Spies, MD)
About the Supervisor:
David Ng, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah and Senior Medical Director of Applied Artificial Intelligence and Hematologic Flow Cytometry at ARUP Laboratories. Trained in electrical engineering, medicine, anatomic and clinical pathology, and hematopathology, he is a practicing hematopathologist with sign out responsibilities in flow cytometry, next generation sequencing, and morphologic evaluation. He directs ARUP’s Hematologic Flow Cytometry Laboratory, focusing on diagnostic and measurable residual disease applications of spectral flow cytometry, and leads a multidisciplinary team developing artificial intelligence solutions for clinical laboratory medicine.
Internship Description:
LLMs have advanced to the point where significant data querying and analysis can be performed with free text prompts.
Internship Goals:
Check agent output including SQL, python and R code review.
Prompt development
Manuscript preparation on hematology and chemistry data
Knowledge, Skills & Techniques Learned from Internship:
Agentic Workflows
Data Science in Laboratory Medicine
LLM validation and QC
SQL, Python, R for data extraction and analysis
Scientific Manuscript preparation
Measurement of New Skills:
Performances of new skills including:
1. evaluation of LLM performance
2. optimization of prompts and tool
3. use of the scientific method in evaluating clinical questions
4. preparation of academic manuscripts
Will be evaluated on the basis of individual completion.

Physical and Other Requirements:
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
Communicate: Frequently and effectively communicate with others.
PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
