Role

You're a senior healthcare integration engineer who lives and breathes HL7v2. Whether you're building best in class integrations supporting hospital systems or navigating the quirks of different EHRs, you bring both technical mastery and strategic insight to every project. You love the challenge of complex integrations and are at ease leading them end-to-end, writing clean code, and making sure data flows exactly where it needs to.

You're just as comfortable in the weeds of HL7 specifications as you are in cross-team conversations, helping clients and colleagues understand what great interoperability looks like. At SmarterDx, your work powers smarter decisions and generates value for health systems.

**This role is fully remote within the US**

What You'll Do
  • Lead the integration design, development, and validation of robust, scalable interfaces between SmarterDx and hospital/health system customer EHRs (Epic, Cerner, Meditech, etc) during the implementation process.
  • Collaborate directly with health system IT stakeholders (Directors of IT, interface engineers, network engineers) and operational leads (Directors of CDI and Coding) to understand integration capabilities and requirements and translate them into technical solutions in order to launch SmarterDx products quickly and effectively
  • Manage end-to-end integration workflows, including specification development, interface mapping, configuration, testing, and go-live support.
  • Lead data validation and reconciliation processes to ensure data integrity and interoperability compliance.
  • Partner with engineering and new product teams to advise on data integration methodologies and develop schema mapping, data transformation logic, implementation guides, and operational support processes.
  • Improve operational efficiency through automating workflows, optimizing code, and streamlining processes.
  • Troubleshoot complex integration issues in production environments.
  • Monitor and advise on evolving interoperability standards; ensure that SmarterDx and our clients continue to leverage best in class integration approaches.
What You Bring
  • 3-5+ years of hands-on HL7v2 build experience with Rhapsody (if your x-intercept is lower, then your y-slope is steep)
  • 5+ years building, deploying, and supporting hospital based HL7v2 interfaces in healthcare environments, with a demonstrated ability to interpret, develop, and transform HL7v2 messages and experience leveraging HIPAA-compliant secure data exchange protocols such as TCP/IP, HTTPS, OAuth2, mTLS, VPN, and SFTP
  • Proven ability to lead collaborative discussions across diverse stakeholder groups- including health system IT leaders (Directors of IT, interface and network engineers) and non-technical users- to align on integration goals, workflows, and requirements.
  • Adept at translating HL7v2 message flows, FHIR API interactions, and data mapping logic into business-impact language and supporting documentation to build trust and secure stakeholder alignment
  • Hands-on experience in languages like JavaScript or Python for message transformation or workflow automation.
  • Excellent debugging skills and a systematic approach to root cause analysis.
  • Experience fostering confidence in implementations by clearly outlining timelines, risk mitigation strategies, and success metrics in plain terms
  • Autonomy and the confidence to drive process improvements throughout times of ambiguity and changing priorities
Nice To Haves
  • Experience enabling FHIR R4 APIs/resources, and SMART on FHIR workflows.
  • Deep knowledge of hospital workflows, clinical data structures, and revenue cycle data flows.
  • Deep subject matter expertise in semantic interoperability standards such as SNOMED CT, LOINC, and RxNorm
  • Background in clinical informatics or certified health IT credentials (e.g., HL7 Certified Specialist, FHIR Proficient, Mirth Connect, Rhapsody, Cloverleaf, or EHR certifications).
  • Experience using SQL queries to retrieve, filter, and analyze data for validation and troubleshooting
  • Participation in HL7 or FHIR working groups or contributions to open-source healthcare integration tools.
  • A background in healthcare consulting or sales engineering
  • Entrepreneurial mindset. Previous experience as an early joiner in a young technology company or evidence that you are scrappy with a builder’s mentality and an unwavering sense of ownership to every challenge
Our stack
  • Rhapsody, AWS, Snowflake, JIRA, HL7Spy
Compensation
  • $180K to $200K salary + equity incentives
