Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About This Role:

We are looking for an EHS Manager to manage our EHS operations. You will be responsible for maturing our EHS practices by improving our policies and rolling them out to the company. The EHS Manager will be expected to lead by example and demonstrate a strong personal commitment to EHS and the safe operation of all Atomic Machines facilities. You will ensure that we are compliant to all applicable standards and that our workplace is safe for our employees and visitors. This role is based in our Berkeley office, with occasional travel to our Santa Clara office.

What you will do:

  • Promote a strong safety culture by participating in ongoing interaction with employees through safety orientations, safety training, safety committee meetings, leading by example and supporting safety recognition systems.
  • Ensure that the EHS policy is communicated and that all employees are properly trained on the content of the policy and the supporting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with EHS procedures that include, but are not limited to: Safety Training, IIPP (Injury and Illness Prevention Programs), Emergency Action/Response Plans, Fire Prevention, Machine Safety and Equipment Usage, Lock Out Tag Out, Hazardous Materials, Personal Protective Equipment, Inspections, Audits and Records.
  • Plan, develop and implement safety training.
  • Lead hazard analysis for the company. Ensure that such analyses are performed before starting any new work and as new processes are being developed.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering to develop first-principles-based hazard mitigation strategies for the technology Atomic Machines is developing.
  • Keep abreast of legislative and regulatory EHS developments to ensure Atomic Machine is prepared for changes in requirements.
  • Contribute requirements and specifications to Atomic Machines engineering teams to achieve safety objectives.
  • Maintain an issue reporting system and ensure timely root cause analysis and resolution of any flagged risks or actual safety incidents.
  • Lead regular site inspections and audits to ensure compliance to applicable standards.
  • Establish targets and monitoring frameworks to minimize EHS hazards and risks and report progress on these metrics to senior leadership.
  • Chair regular reviews of the EHS policy to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Interface with outside parties in the course of audit or incident response.
  • Provision adequate resources to ensure that managers and employees have what they need to effectively implement EHS policies and procedures.
  • Work with and manage outside consultants as appropriate to develop and implement appropriate hazard analysis and mitigation plans for risks.
  • Ensure accurate records are maintained in an audit-ready state.
  • Ensure that appropriate incident response plans and training are in place.

What you’ll need:

  • 6+ years experience managing EHS programs, with at least 5+ years of hands-on experience working with safety regulations and requirements.
  • Bachelor of Science EHS, or a related discipline. Masters preferred.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment including familiarity with common manufacturing processes.
  • Training in incident investigation by a reputable training body.
  • Ability to shift between strategic and tactic activities with hands-on approach.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, technical EHS expertise and a passion for continuous improvement to build a strong, proactive safety culture.
  • At least 3 of the following:
  • Understanding of the hazards of ionizing radiation including x-rays and how to mitigate them.
  • Experience as Laser Safety Officer (LSO) for Class 4 laser safety practices and requirements.
  • Expertise in hazardous materials (classes, handling, storage, disposal).
  • Experience in hazard management for those working with high voltages or currents.
  • Expertise in regulatory and compliance requirements related to our business.
  • Expertise in complying with CA environmental regulations.
  • Robotics safety and machine shop safety.

Bonus Points:

What We Do

Atomic Machines is redefining humanity’s relationship with matter. We see a future where our tools will allow us to reorganize matter at the atomic level at will, where we will go from bits to atoms for any object or machine that can be designed in alignment with physical laws. We have begun our journey with the development of a robotic manufacturing platform capable of making an entirely new class of micro-electromechanical (MEMS) devices. We are well funded and have exceptionally strong product/market fit and a clear go-to-market path for the device we will make first with our platform. Our platform breaks traditional manufacturing paradigms and constraints, enabling inexpensive rapid prototyping as well as large scale manufacturing with highly compelling economics.

Joining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team working on a massive world-changing mission. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its early days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.
