Europe IT Internship: Data Science (Req_ID)

What You’ll Do

As a Data Scientist, you'll analyze the current process flow of a building and identify data points. Using historical and real-time data, you'll create models that improve how we work at UPS. Can you surpass human planners? Can your models provide real-world data and recommendations with huge-scale impacts? Here, you’ll have the opportunity to learn and work on the following business case:

Eindhoven Hub Process Model (ENDHPM)

One of the main distribution hubs of UPS, for ground transport is located at Eindhoven in the Netherlands. We are building an AI Powered Optimization System of the sorting process in Eindhoven facility. An existing AI powered simulator simulates the package flow in the warehouse using various Machine Learning models. We also have models which predicts the time taken for packages to be sorted from point of induction to their final destinations. You would be building an AI agent, which can run simulations with various combinations of the warehouse configuration and find the optimal one to minimize the sorting time. You would build a GUI, which would help the Warehouse teams to interact with the simulator to try various warehouse parameters, breakdowns.

Get ready to:

• Load data from primary and secondary sources to Google Cloud;
• Fine tune existing prediction models and evaluate other prediction models to improve the existing simulator;
• Build an AI agent to predict an optimal warehouse configuration, that will reduce the sort time;
• Build a GUI for users to interact with the Simulator;
• Use statistical tools to identify, analyze and interpret patterns and trends in complex data sets for diagnosis and prediction;
• Quantify business performance for assessment and comparison over periods of time.

What You’ll Need

• Specialization in Data Science;
• AI/ML skill sets;
• Strong Data Science, Machine Learning and Mathematical skills;
• Hands on experience in using machine learning models like Light Gradient-Boosting Machine (GBM), Deep Neural Network (dense), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), etc;
• Experience in hyperparameter tuning (number of layers, size of layers, learning rate, etc.) using Bayesian search in LightGBM, Exhaustive search in DNNs, etc;
• Knowledge of programming languages – BigQuery SQL, Python, JAVA, C++, Shell Script, Javascript, XML;
• Technical proficiency in database design, data models, and techniques for data mining and segmentation;
• Experience working with Cloud Technology preferably Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery, Google Cloud Storage, Vertex AI);
• Soft skills: Communication, accountability, adaptability, eagerness to learn, independence, resilience, problem-solving, time management;
• To sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement with UPS for data privacy;
• To handover all deliverables to UPS as intellectual property, not to be used outside the internship program.
