About the Team:
The South China Morning Post seeks a talented Infographic designer to join its award-winning graphics team.
Purpose of the Position:
Join the SCMP Infographic Team to create detailed Infographics, charts, and visual explainers. The position is part of the team responsible for the research and execution of all visual journalism pieces for Digital, Print and Social Media channels of SCMP.
In this role, you will:
- Create visual narratives, infographics, data visualisation, and visual explainers for Online (all screens) and Print
- Possess analytical and time-management skills, ability to work on multiple short- and long-range projects simultaneously and around deadlines
- Manage geographic and mapping resources.
- Find, gather, and process raw data and information through field research, interviews, etc. to build static and interactive graphics and visuals stories for the Newsroom and other areas of SCMP
- Work independently at all stages, and join collaborative teams with reporters, engineers, and editors.
- Learn how to use in-house interactive tools to create assets and full dynamic graphics
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
- Be an artist able to transform abstract concepts into attractive illustrations
- Show initiative in producing original ideas for graphics
- Meet deadlines in the most optimal way
- Investigate and implement new web-related technologies related to user interface design.
- Maintain the structure and design of the projects based on team and user feedback
- Conduct regular research on emerging technologies related to Infographics and Data visualization
- Create mockups of the widgets and projects to share with stakeholders
- Show initiative in giving and executing original ideas for graphics/visualisations
- Help maintain and improve our graphics templates.
- Coding and Programming skills for server-side development and back-end functionality is a must.
- Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design or any other related qualifications\ relevant experience
- Min 3+ years of experience in news media
- Excellent communication skills
- Creative, energetic, and independent with excellent critical thinking and interpersonal skills
- Good level of written and spoken English
- HTML5, CSS, modern JavaScript, D3.js (or similar data-driven frameworks), GSAP or Anime.js, p5.js, Three.js as a plus
- Proficiency in Solid skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects is a plus)
- Proficiency in Experience with information design, data visualization, and visual storytelling
- Proficient project management and organizational skills
