The Industrial Design Manager will lead a team of industrial designers to create innovative, functional, and aesthetically pleasing products. This role combines design expertise, team leadership, and strategic vision to drive product development from concept to manufacturing. The ideal candidate will have experience in managing design teams, strong knowledge of design principles, and a proven ability to translate business goals into user-centered designs.
Key Responsibilities:Leadership & Team Management:
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of industrial designers to ensure high-quality design output.
Foster a collaborative environment within the design team and with other departments (engineering, marketing, etc.).
Conduct performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and guide team members' professional development.
Product Design & Innovation:
Oversee the design process from initial concept through to final production, ensuring alignment with company goals and brand identity.
Create product concepts and prototypes that balance form, function, and manufacturability.
Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are feasible and cost-effective.
Design Strategy & Vision:
Develop and implement design strategies that align with market trends, customer needs, and company objectives.
Lead design brainstorming sessions and provide creative direction throughout the development process.
Drive innovation by researching emerging trends, materials, and technologies in industrial design.
Project Management:
Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and on-budget delivery of design solutions.
Coordinate with cross-functional teams to meet deadlines and resolve any issues related to product design or development.
Quality Assurance & Testing:
Ensure that designs meet high-quality standards, are ergonomic, and comply with safety regulations.
Oversee the prototyping, testing, and iteration processes to refine designs and improve functionality.
Stakeholder Collaboration:
Work closely with product managers, engineers, marketers, and other stakeholders to ensure designs meet the needs of target customers and business requirements.
Present design concepts and final products to internal and external stakeholders, including executives, clients, or customers.
Vendor and Supplier Management:
Manage relationships with external vendors, manufacturers, and design partners to ensure the efficient production of designs.
Oversee material selection and the sourcing of components to align with design vision and cost considerations.
Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related field.
Experience:
5+ years of experience in industrial design, with at least 2-3 years in a managerial or leadership role.
Strong portfolio showcasing design expertise across a variety of industries (consumer products, furniture, electronics, etc.).
Proven experience managing design teams and working cross-functionally with engineering, marketing, and manufacturing teams.
Skills:
Proficiency in design software (e.g., CAD tools like SolidWorks, Rhino, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.).
Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and production techniques.
Excellent communication and presentation skills to convey design concepts to diverse audiences.
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
Ability to balance creativity with practical considerations of production, cost, and feasibility.
Preferred:
Experience with 3D printing, prototyping, and rapid iteration techniques.
