Position Overview:
BRT Extrusions is looking for a knowledgeable and experienced Controls Technician to support, troubleshoot, and maintain BRT’s industrial control systems and automated equipment. This position works closely with Controls Engineering, Maintenance, and Production to reduce downtime, identify root causes of failures, commission controls devices, and improve equipment reliability. This role requires strong electrical troubleshooting skills and the ability to understand how field devices, PLC logic, safety systems, drives, instrumentation, HMIs, and industrial networks work together.

The Controls Technician should develop toward independently troubleshooting routine controls problems, conducting effective root-cause investigations, performing basic PLC and HMI modifications under engineering direction, supporting system commissioning, and becoming the first level of controls support for Production and Maintenance. The position should also build the technical depth needed to support BRT’s long-term controls standards and equipment-reliability goals.
Essential duties and requirements of the Industrial Controls Technician:

  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and controls troubleshooting ability on extrusion, press, and heavy hydraulic systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Rockwell Automation control platforms, including PLCs, PanelView HMIs, PowerFlex variable-frequency drives, Kinetix servo systems, and associated motion-control equipment.
  • Ability to connect to a PLC, navigate the program, view ladder logic, and understand how the logic controls equipment operation.
  • Ability to trace ladder logic and use it as a troubleshooting tool without making unauthorized program changes.
  • Strong knowledge of 24 VDC and 120 VAC industrial control schemes, wiring practices, and electrical safety.
  • Experience troubleshooting digital I/O, analog I/O, relays, contactors, solenoids, sensors, motors, drives, and control-panel components.
  • Experience commissioning and troubleshooting EtherNet/IP devices.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting IO-Link masters, IO-Link sensors, and smart field devices.
  • Understanding of 4–20 mA and 0–10 V analog signals, including scaling, calibration, wiring, and fault diagnosis.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and control-system documentation.
  • Familiarity with industrial safety systems, including safety relays, safety PLCs, emergency-stop circuits, light curtains, scanners, and guard interlocks.
  • Ability to use a multimeter and other electrical diagnostic tool to measure voltage, current, resistance, continuity, and control signals.
  • Ability to safely replace, configure, commission, and test industrial controls components.
  • Ability to perform structured root-cause analysis and distinguish the root cause of a failure from its symptoms.
  • Ability to clearly document troubleshooting steps, findings, corrective actions, and recommendations.
  • Ability to use computerized maintenance management software, such as MaintainX, to manage work orders and document maintenance activities.
Qualifications

Non-Technical Requirements for the Industrial Controls Technician:
• Document program changes, device settings, repairs, recurring failures, root causes, and system modifications.
• Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently while understanding when an issue must be escalated to Controls Engineering.
• Perform root-cause analysis on recurring equipment failures and recommend corrective actions that address the
underlying issue rather than only restoring temporary operation.
• Escalate advanced programming, system-design, and engineering-level changes to the Controls Engineer.
• Must have ability to read and understand basic instructions in English.
• Must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
• Must be willing to take part in all required job and/or employment-related training courses. This includes but is
not limited to all safety and technical or role or tool specific training.

Educational Requirements for the Industrial Controls Technician:
• Two-year degree in industrial, electrical or controls related schooling plus 3 years of experience in industrial
automation equipment.
• 5+ years of experience in industrial automation equipment without degree will be considered.

Skills Required

  • Two-year degree in industrial, electrical, or controls-related education plus 3 years of experience with industrial automation equipment
  • Alternatively, 5 or more years of experience with industrial automation equipment without a degree
  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and controls troubleshooting experience on extrusion, press, and heavy hydraulic systems
  • Hands-on experience with Rockwell Automation PLCs, PanelView HMIs, PowerFlex drives, Kinetix servo systems, and motion-control equipment
  • Ability to connect to PLCs, navigate programs, view and trace ladder logic, and use logic for troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of 24 VDC and 120 VAC industrial control schemes, wiring practices, and electrical safety
  • Experience troubleshooting digital and analog I/O, relays, contactors, solenoids, sensors, motors, drives, and control panels
  • Experience commissioning and troubleshooting EtherNet/IP devices
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting IO-Link masters, sensors, and smart field devices
  • Understanding of 4-20 mA and 0-10 V analog signals, including scaling, calibration, wiring, and fault diagnosis
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and control-system documentation
  • Familiarity with industrial safety systems, safety relays, safety PLCs, emergency-stop circuits, light curtains, scanners, and guard interlocks
  • Ability to use a multimeter and other electrical diagnostic tools
  • Ability to safely replace, configure, commission, and test industrial controls components
  • Root-cause analysis, troubleshooting documentation, communication, organization, and independent work skills
  • Ability to read and understand basic instructions in English and communicate verbally and in writing
  • Willingness to complete required safety, technical, role-specific, and tool-specific training
  • Ability to use computerized maintenance management software such as MaintainX
