We are seeking a highly motivated Industrial Applications Developer Intern to join our Smart Factory team for the Summer 2026 internship program. This role is designed for students who want to apply software engineering skills to real-world manufacturing challenges.
As an Industrial Applications Developer Intern, you will work alongside experienced developers to design and build software solutions that connect manufacturing equipment and operational technology systems with enterprise platforms. You will gain hands-on experience in Python development, application development, industrial data integration, and building tools that deliver real-time operational insight across our manufacturing facilities. The is a full-time summer internship working 40 hours per week. This is a hybrid role spending at least 3 days per week on-site, either in an office setting or at the manufacturing facilities.
The Smart Factory Developer Intern participates in our Company-wide Summer Internship Experience that helps college students develop professional skills. During this 12-week program, interns spend approximately 80 percent of their time completing a business-driven project. Projects may include developing new integrations between plant systems and enterprise applications, building industrial dashboards and applications, or creating tools that improve manufacturing performance. At the conclusion of the program, each intern presents their project to their manager, mentors, and members of senior leadership.
Interns spend the remainder of their time gaining additional on-the-job experience and participating in classroom learning sessions covering professional development topics such as business etiquette, resume writing, interviewing, and presenting with confidence. In keeping with Our Philosophy, the program also includes a community service component. Interns are based at our Company headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and enhance industrial applications, integrations, and dashboards
- Design and support data integrations between plant-floor systems and enterprise platforms
- Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and continuous improvement teams to translate operational needs into technical solutions
- Apply software development best practices, including version control, testing, and documentation
Qualifications
- Junior or senior pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- Demonstrated experience developing in Python
- Strong interest in manufacturing and applying software to improve operational processes
- Foundational knowledge of databases (SQL), data modeling, and system integration concepts
- Exposure to AI or machine learning concepts and interest in applying data-driven methods to industrial challenges
- Strong analytical skills, ownership mindset, and ability to work effectively in both office and plant environments
Additional experience considered a plus:
- Exposure to industrial systems, PLCs, SCADA/MES platforms, or manufacturing data environments
- Experience building dashboards, data visualizations, or internal tools
- Understanding of basic networking and cybersecurity principles within operational environments
- Participation in engineering design teams, robotics clubs, hackathons, or hands-on technical projects
