Placement Term: A 1-year term is required (September 28, 2026 - September 25, 2027, start date flexible).

Work Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday (20 hours/wk) (occasional work on Sundays for special events) 

Primary Area of Focus: 

Primary Area of Focus:

The Greenager Program is a San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and Port of San Francisco youth stewardship and leadership program that runs from February through August each year. The program was created and designed to offer teens a chance to play an important role in the community by improving the city’s green spaces, raising awareness, creating place-based projects and/or projects based on issues or themes participants value and are interested in.

Duties:

• Directly mentor groups of 45 youths annually in the Greenager Program, graduating seven cohorts in total
• Supervise and lead 1,000 hours of outdoor recreational trips for youth
• Conduct over 2,500 hours in curriculum development and environmental education activities
• Coordinate volunteer events and park projects for youths to actively engage in their communities
• Plan and implement an 8-month agenda including place-based educational, discussions, and activities
• Facilitate presentations and meetings with partner organizations to increase participants from priority neighborhoods
• Recruit and interview over 300 rising 9th-12th grade youth participants 
• Track program budget and process invoices and payments from vendors.

Marginal Duties:

• Assist with special events, community outreach, and other SFRPD youth engagement activities as needed.
• Support program communications, including documenting activities, preparing materials, and sharing program updates with partners.
• Perform other related program, administrative, or field duties as assigned.

Compensation: 

•  $500 weekly stipend, paid bi-weekly
• $1280-month housing allowance 
• Health Insurance if required

Desired Qualifications:

• Enjoys working with diverse intergenerational crowds, and has a strong interest in working with youth
• Interest and experience in youth and urban parks
• Experience leading/facilitating youth through structured activities
• Able to engage and comfortable managing groups of youth and/or adults for 2+ hours
• Works well in a team setting and similarly, is self-motivated and can work independently
• Passion for the environment and working outdoors
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Computer literate; MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, Internet
• Previous related experience or background in biology, environmental studies, or other related subjects or strong interest and willingness to learn independently and through experience
• B.A. or B.S. in a related subject (preferred, not required)
• Comfortable driving large trucks or willing to learn
• Ideally a Bay Area resident
• Passion for the environment and working outdoors and genuine interest in connecting youth to nature 

Required Qualifications:

• Willing to work occasional off hours and outdoors in inclement weather
• California State Drivers’ License with a good driving record
• Experience working with youth is a must

Training:

Participants will receive hands-on training as well as formal workshop-style training in San Francisco's natural history and ecology, youth leadership techniques, restoration skills, program coordination, special event planning, and general operation training. Interns will also learn key aspects of program, and project management through hands-on work, and inter-departmental and cross-agency collaborations.

• Computer literate; MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, and Google. 
• Willingness to work occasional off hours and outdoors in inclement weather. 
• Experience leading/facilitating youth through structured activities independently. 
• Comfortable working with small and large intergenerational crowds. 
• Must possess a valid California State Drivers’ License  
• Willingness to submit a copy of driving record if hired 
• Commit to 20 hours per week and a 1-year position
• Must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination by the start of the position
