Overview

Job Summary

Leads the Indirect Tax department responsible for ensuring compliance with state and local tax regulations, including sales, use, fuel, and property taxes. Minimizes adverse indirect tax consequences through planning opportunities and managing external audits. Provides support and research for various internal departments. Performs other related work.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively monitor and maintain working knowledge of ongoing state and local tax changes and provide updates to internal departments as needed. Lead the design and implementation of changes necessary to comply with legislation.
  • Ensure processes are in place for compliance with state and local sales, use and other tax reporting requirements. Review and approve sales, use, and other tax returns for filing.
  • Review reconciliations of indirect tax related accounts and review monthly journal entries.
  • Manage and collaborate across departments, support state tax audits and other inquiries from taxing authorities. Report on ongoing status.
  • Act as liaison to sales, use, and property tax consultants.
  • Develop tracking mechanisms and originate tax refunds related to government sponsored economic incentives. Proactively pursue other indirect tax incentive opportunities for the business.
  • Review, create and maintain documentation of workflows and processes related to assigned areas.
  • Mentor/guide staff.
  • Perform all job duties and responsibilities with honesty and integrity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience working with and applying tax laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including the ability to lead projects and guide the work of others.
  • Experience interpreting and analyzing statistical and financial information, applying strong analytical and problem-solving skills with close attention to detail.
  • Advanced skills using Microsoft Excel and proficiency in other common business software.
  • Financial reporting and general ledger accounting experience.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform a variety of simultaneous tasks (multi-tasking) in a high-pressure environment, demonstrating initiative, dependability and self-direction to complete projects within expected deadlines or defined time estimates.
  • Excellent verbal, written and inter-personal communication skills and ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with co-workers, supervisors, store personnel and vendors.

Preferred Experience:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Master’s degree.
  • Experience Supervising or Managing a team of professionals.
  • Experience with business intelligence software.
