About the Role
Our client, a leading agribusiness corporation focused on high-quality farm produce for the export market, is seeking a self-driven Independent Investigator to conduct impartial, thorough, and evidence-based investigations into grievances referred to the organizational grievance resolution mechanism.
The role exists to establish a clear, credible, and objective factual record upon which the relevant authority may base its determinations. The Independent Investigator shall act with strict independence, professional integrity, and due regard to the rights, dignity, and safety of all persons involved.
📍 Location Note: This role is based in Kenya with frequent travel to affected communities for field-based investigations. The investigator will work remotely when not in the field.
Key Responsibilities:
• Plan and execute impartial, trauma-informed, and objective end-to-end investigations into formal grievances, complaints, and allegations
• Lead field-based and desktop investigations into community complaints regarding access, environmental impacts, crop damage, noise, or other pertinent community issues
• Travel directly to affected communities to perform site inspections, verify physical evidence, and assess local impacts firsthand
• Interview community leaders, affected residents, project managers, and contractors using culturally sensitive and inclusive methods
• Ensure all complaints are accurately recorded, categorized, tracked, and updated in the grievance mechanism database
• Draft comprehensive evidence-based investigation reports outlining facts and findings without bias
• Propose actionable corrective measures to mitigate community risks
• Ensure all investigations adhere to internal organizational policies, prevailing legal thresholds, and confidentiality requirements
Key Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Development Studies, Criminology, Environmental Science, Communications, Law, or a related field
• 5+ years of experience in community relations, social impact management, human rights (including SGBV cases), or field-based grievance management
• Prior experience in large-scale infrastructure, mining, energy, oil & gas, international development (NGOs), or large commercial agriculture projects is highly preferred
• Deep understanding of local customs, community dynamics, and traditional leadership structures
• Strong analytical, evidence assessment, negotiation, mediation, and active listening skills under high-pressure or emotionally charged conditions
• Knowledge of Kenyan law and international human rights standards
• Proven ability to handle sensitive and complex matters
• A reputation for integrity, impartiality, and professionalism
