Scotts Miracle-Gro is seeking an experienced Tax Accounting Manager to lead the company’s corporate income tax provision, financial statement disclosures, and related internal controls. This role will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the accurate and timely preparation, review, and reporting of the company’s global income tax provision in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
This will be a hybrid role at our WHQ in Marysville, OH!
Key Responsibilities:
Provision Preparation & Review:
Lead the quarterly and annual global consolidated income tax provision process under ASC 740, including calculations of current and deferred tax provisions, valuation allowances, and effective tax rates (ETR).
Draft and review clear, compliant tax footnotes and disclosures for SEC filings (10-Q and 10-K)
Partner with the broader finance department on forecasting, accounting matters, and cash flow
Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors during financial statement audits
Tax Planning & Strategy:
Support tax research and planning initiatives in coordination with tax leadership.
Assist in implementing tax strategies to optimize the company’s overall tax position.
Tax Compliance & Internal Controls:
Support the preparation and review of federal, state, and local income and franchise tax returns and return-to-provision adjustments
Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Section 404 requirements.
Team Leadership & Development:
Oversee and mentor tax associates, providing on-the-job training and career development.
Manage workloads, deadlines, and resource allocation within the tax team.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth within the tax function.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education & Certification:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
CPA, MST, or equivalent preferred.
Experience:
6+ years of relevant income tax experience, preferably in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm.
Deep technical knowledge of ASC 740 and robust understanding of deferred taxes
Strong knowledge of U.S. federal and state income tax laws
Skills & Competencies:
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Strong leadership and team development abilities.
Effective communication and ability to collaborate across departments.
Proficiency in tax provisioning, tax compliance and accounting software.
