We are seeking a proactive Pavement Leading Hand to support the Foreman and lead a small team delivering pavement repairs and maintenance on the state highway network for the IDC contract with NZTA in the Manawatu-Whanganui region. As a Pavement Leading Hand, you'll supervise and work alongside a specialist crew constructing, repairing, and resurfacing roads, motorways, car parks, and footpaths under the IDC contract.

This role offers the opportunity to apply your expertise in machinery operation, quality control, and team mentoring to ensure every project meets high standards of safety, efficiency, and durability. You’ll be instrumental in guiding daily site activities, fostering a collaborative environment, and maintaining effective communication and accurate reporting from start to finish.

We have positions available based from our Palmerston North and Whanganui branches.

In addition to the above you will:

• Working in a pavement and maintenance crew to mentor a small team, allocating tasks and monitoring performance to ensure efficient and high-quality outcomes
• Undertake pre-seal repairs, pavement dig outs, high and low shoulder repairs, water tabling, general road and cycleway/footpath construction, as well as any other planned maintenance as part of our IDC contract ensuring all works to meet contract specifications
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate maintenance activities and resources for both routine and urgent tasks, prioritising work as needed
• Conduct site inspections, implement safety measures, and respond promptly to emergencies, maintaining clear communication with stakeholders
• Attend emergency call outs on a rostered basis and during standard hours of duty which can include both day and night shifts

We’re looking for someone with:

• Full Class 2 Licence
• WTR Endorsements
• Proven background in civil construction, specifically in pavement works (asphalt, chip seal, concrete, or road base)
• Experience in heavy machinery e.g. rollers, skid steer and pavers preferred
• Be flexible to work AM and PM shifts up to 10 - 12 hours and weekends as required on rostered basis
• Ability to read and interpret works schedules and compliance standards
• Previous experience in a similar Leading Hand or Team Leader role is advantageous
