Description of Work

This Hydrogeologist position is in the Corrective Action Branch (CAB) of the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section. The Hydrogeologist position is responsible for advanced environmental and geological/hydrogeological studies including the management and oversight of assessment and remediation activities at sites contaminated from petroleum, hazardous substances, and other regulated substance releases from USTs and for petroleum releases from non-UST sources such as Aboveground Storage Tanks (ASTs) and spills.
The Hydrogeologist ensures that parties responsible for petroleum and hazardous substance releases, including owners and operators of USTs, take proper and timely measures to assess and remediate the resulting contaminated soil and groundwater to the appropriate protective levels. The Hydrogeologist provides a high level of technical assistance and advice to responsible parties, their environmental consultants, licensed geologist/hydrogeologists, licensed engineers, and other representatives.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide expert knowledge of pertinent rules, regulations and policies, to responsible parties (RPs), environmental consultants, owners and operators, other state or local officials and other interested parties.
• Provide project management oversight for a wide variety of environmental and geologic/hydrogeologic investigations, assessments, and remediation activities.
• Provide a high level of technical assistance and advice to internal colleagues, RPs, environmental consultants, owners and operators, other state or local officials and other interested parties.
• Analyze and evaluate scientific and technical data including groundwater, soil, geology and hydrogeology data.
• Provide leadership and communication, with colleagues and interested parties, to formulate methods for achieving results through cooperative efforts.

The Division of Waste Management is responsible for protecting the public health and environment through assuring that solid and hazardous waste and underground storage tanks are managed properly, and existing contamination is cleaned up across the State of North Carolina. This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in geology, geosciences, physical science or a related field, or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science course work from an accredited college or university. Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the North Carolina Board for the Licensing of Geologists; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
