Job DescriptionAre you a people-focused, highly organized HR professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment? California Closets San Diego is looking for a Human Resources Manager to help elevate our culture, support our teams, and build strong processes that keep our growing organization running smoothly. This is a true “one-person HR department” role right now — you will own everything HR from A to Z while building scalable processes.
As the Human Resources Manager, you will report directly to the General Manager and work side-by-side with leadership and managers every day. Your work will directly shape the employee experience from start to finish: recruiting and onboarding, coaching and performance support, benefits administration, compliance, and employee relations.
You’ll be a trusted resource and partner, helping ensure our teams feel supported, empowered, and aligned with the premium standard of the California Closets brand. QualificationsDuties and Responsibilities:
Manage recruiting and onboarding, including creating job ads, coordinating interviews, conducting screenings, completing new-hire paperwork, overseeing orientation, and partnering with managers on consistent training plans
Serve as a trusted resource for employees by addressing questions, concerns, policy clarification, and supporting conflict resolution with fairness, discretion, and proper documentation
Update and maintain current employee handbook
Support managers with employee relations, performance issues, corrective action documentation, and maintaining a positive, high-accountability culture
Coordinate performance reviews, probationary evaluations, development plans, and tracking of all performance-related documentation
Manage payroll and benefits administration, including employee eligibility questions, PTO/attendance tracking, and leave management
Maintain and audit our internal documentation for accuracy and compliance, and support continuous process improvement and special HR projects
Communicate company policies and updates clearly and effectively, and provide coaching to managers on sensitive employee matters and workplace practices
Conduct background checks, manage pre-employment compliance steps, administer drug/alcohol testing programs, and coordinate all employee lifecycle activities including promotions, transfers, terminations, and separations
Ensure compliance with state and federal labor laws (including California specific requirements), maintain HRIS and employee files, enforce policies and handbooks, and manage workers’ compensation and safety documentation
Support employee engagement initiatives, staff events, internal communication, and uphold brand values for a premium employee experience
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field; HR certification preferred
7+ years of progressive HR experience with at least 3–4 years spent in California companies
Experience as the senior HR lead in a 50–200-person company (or similar)
Experience supporting multiple departments and navigating sensitive HR situations
Confident operating as the single HR point of contact while helping build the foundation for future growth
Strong and current understanding of California employment law, including CFRA vs. FMLA, PAGA, and San Diego sick leave rules
Hands-on experience running payroll and benefits in CA
High level of confidentiality, professionalism, and discretion
Proven ability to conduct thorough, fair investigations and document properly
Self-starter with excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Google Sheets
Spanish language skills are a plus (both written and verbal)

Competitive base salary: $100,000-120,000
