We’re seeking someone to join our team as a Human Resource Business Partner who will serve as a trusted partner providing strategic advice on key people initiatives and HR priorities with business leaders across a variety of departments. The individual will influence and execute long‑term HR solutions and outcomes in a fast‑paced, dynamic and ambiguous environment. Operating effectively across the full range of HR disciplines and partnering with managers and colleagues at all levels of the business, this role offers an excellent opportunity to work closely with the business on a range of strategic initiatives.

In the Human Capital Management division, we provide advice and insight to attract, retain, reward and develop a talented global workforce, giving employees the support and tools they need to succeed. This is a Director level position within the HR Business Partner Team,  responsible for handling employee relations issues, career development, diversity & inclusion initiatives and annual processes including year-end compensation, promotions, talent review and performance management.

What you’ll do in the role:

Actively work with business leaders, employees, and global and regional HR colleagues to support the day-to-day needs of the client groups in recruiting, employee relations, talent management and reward/compensation.

HR Advisory

  • Serve as trusted advisor with key internal clients and HR colleagues by providing valuable HR advice/insights backed by data analysis, market intelligence, strategic thinking, understanding of the regulatory climate with excellent communication skills.
  • Resourcing:
    • Work proactively with the business on creating hiring plans and reinforcing creative solutions around talent acquisition
    • Partner with the business to understand resource requirements and assist with headcount planning and reports
    • Actively market Morgan Stanley value proposition to prospective candidates
  • Conduct on-boarding (for senior hires) and exit processes

Employee Relations

  • Work with the business, employment counsel, employee relations in HR, legal, and compliance (as appropriate) to interpret and apply Morgan Stanley policies and procedures
  • Advise and coach managers across a wide range of employee relations issues taking into account best practice, legislative framework and commercial outcome
  • Influence managers and work with them to deal effectively and appropriately with the management of a range of performance issues

Talent Management

  • Leverage analytical data to advise managers/business on workforce management and talent strategy including succession plan & development plan
  • Partner with the business to drive and reinforce the Diversity & Inclusion agenda and the firm’s Culture and Core Value
  • Drive Labor Management/Work Style Reform (Hatarakikata-kaikaku) to have better Work Life Balance and pursue employee engagement while not sacrificing business performance
  • Monitor the performance evaluation process to ensure timely and effective communication
  • Support performance issues through the evaluation process
  • Manage performance discussions and promotion processes
  • Within the context of business priorities, work proactively with managers to identify and develop top talent and successors

Reward and Compensation

  • Partner with managers, data team and HR counterparts in other locations to manage the annual Year End compensation processes
  • Advise managers to ensure pay for performance, parity of awards, robust assessment of promotion candidates, necessary documentation etc
  • Stay abreast of market developments to ensure ability to proactively provide business with valuable market insight
  • Own completion of monthly audits, in order to ensure accurate and reliable data, giving guidance as necessary

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • University degree and at least 6 years' relevant experience would generally be expected to find the skills required for this role
  • Strong client focus with excellent judgment, analytical ability, critical thinking, and influencing skills
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills; proficiency in English and Japanese required
  • Ability to build strong local and global relationships across and beyond HR; adept at navigating complex organizations
  • Comfortable operating in a dynamic, evolving environment
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills; able to manage conflict and drive consensus
  • Collaborative team player willing to contribute to Firm- and HR‑wide initiatives beyond core responsibilities
  • Acts as a culture carrier for the Firm
  • Self‑starter with strong project management capabilities
  • Thrives in a fast‑paced, high‑change environment
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent prioritization skills
  • AI‑literate, able to apply process engineering to HR and Firm workflows
