The STO HSE Leader is accountable for Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) performance across a defined portfolio of operational manufacturing sites. Operating through a matrix structure, this role provides leadership and direction to site-based HSE teams while ensuring compliance, consistency, and excellence across the portfolio.
The individual will collaborate on program design and lead execution of standard work, systems, and processes that reduce risk and embed a culture of HSE ownership. Success requires strong technical expertise, practical leadership, and the ability to translate standards into measurable results.
This is a senior enabling role that combines strategic vision, deep technical knowledge, and hands-on execution. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable influencing senior leaders, including the STO leadership team, advising on topics including high-risk operations, and ensuring effective delivery of HSE expectations on the ground.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Lead HSE across a defined portfolio of sites, ensuring consistent implementation of expectations and compliance with legal and internal frameworks. E.g. Experience with ISO standards (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001).
- Collaborate on program design (including high-risk operations) and translate strategy into site-level action plans with measurable outcomes.
- Drive change in a systemic way leveraging e.g. Change management certification or experience (e.g., Prosci, Kotter).
- Drive accountability for execution of HSE programs, compliance, and continuous improvement. Leveraging expertise in incident investigation and root cause analysis (5 Whys, RCA).
- Influence senior stakeholders and partner cross-functionally to embed HSE into operations and business planning. Use KPIs, audits, and performance reviews to monitor progress, manage risk, and drive decision-making.
- Familiarity with digital HSE platforms (e.g., Enablon, Intelex, SAP EHS).
- Build organisational capability by coaching and mentoring site HSE professionals, fostering a culture of ownership and engagement.
- Manage multiple priorities while maintaining focus on delivery and impact.
What you need to bring to the role:
- Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related discipline (or technical equivalent).
- Certified HSE professional (e.g., NEBOSH, CSP, CMIOSH, or equivalent).
- 8+ years of senior HSE leadership experience in manufacturing or complex operations, with proven success in strategy execution, compliance, risk reduction, and cultural transformation.
- Strong technical expertise in high-risk operations and regulatory frameworks.
- Skilled in data-driven decision-making and performance management.
- Demonstrated competency in Lean practices and/or Integrated Work Systems.
- Fluent English with excellent communication and influencing skills. Additional language skills desirable.
- Collaborative leader who thrives in a matrix environment and builds cross-functional alignment.
- Results-driven and execution-focused, able to balance strategic vision with practical delivery.
- Confident communicator, capable of engaging senior leaders, HSE professionals, and operational teams alike.
- Lean certified.
- Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
