Job Description

The HSE Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day implementation and continuous improvement of Health & Safety programs. The Health & Safety Specialist position provides technical and professional support services to operations and reports directly to the local Plant Manager and functionally to the Director of Health, Safety & Environment.

Job responsibilities

  • Participates in daily management meetings and weekly meetings with Site Leadership to provide HSE support, guidance, and updates on safety performance and compliance.

  • Spends significant time on the shop floor engaging with operators, supervisors, and maintenance personnel to observe work activities, reinforce safe behaviors, and identify hazards and improvement opportunities.

  • Identifies and evaluates hazardous conditions and unsafe practices; applies hierarchy of controls to support risk reduction and communicates findings to site supervision.

  • Provides coaching and guidance to employees and supervisors on safe work practices and supports continuous improvement of HSE performance at the site. Support site supervisors during investigations and ensures timely documentation and completion of incident reports.

  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and loss events to identify root causes and contributing factors and recommend corrective and preventive actions.

  • Leads focused reviews of Significant Events to identify key findings and learnings that support organization-wide prevention of Serious Incidents or Fatality (SIF) and potential SIF events, including those where no injury occurred.

  • Monitors and follows up on corrective actions to ensure completion and effectiveness.

  • Conducts scheduled Health and Safety, Environmental, and Loss Prevention inspections and audits at the plant to support compliance and hazard identification.

  • Participates in site and corporate HSE audit activities by supporting preparation, documentation, and follow-up of findings and corrective actions.

  • Maintains plant regulatory and environmental documentation and supports environmental compliance activities and reporting as required. Escalates compliance issues to the Operations Manager or Corporate HSE as required.

  • Supports the development and maintenance of SOPs and JHA/JSA, maintains the plant training calendar, and ensures training records are maintained per regulatory requirements.

  • Conducts employee safety training and HSE onboarding using appropriate materials and supports site-level safety activities including toolbox talks, self-audits, Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) participation, and ergonomics programs.

  • Performs HSE activities including inspections, audits, incident reporting, FLRA, hazard identification, and behavior-based safety observations using Intelex and other site systems in support of company requirements.

  • Supports contractor safety management by ensuring contractor compliance requirements are met and non-compliant contractors are addressed per established procedures.

  • Maintains HSE metrics and documentation and supports preparation of reports and presentations for site and corporate leadership.

Qualifications

  • Requires a minimum of a BA/BS degree in occupational safety, science, engineering or related discipline

  • 3-5 years prior experience in a manufacturing setting working in a Health & Safety Role

  • Professional EHS certification preferred

  • Proven experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • A team player who can lead by example and influence.

  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills to establish priorities and work effectively in a team.

  • Strong communication (written, verbal, presentation) and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint.

  • Technical writing skills for creating documents aimed at an adult learning audience.

  • Commitment to health, safety, and the environment.

  • Familiarity with safety and environmental legislation
