We are recruiting HSE Business Partners to be based at our offices in Durban and Cape Town and have oversight of sites across both locations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

HSE Strategy & Leadership:

  • Drive implementation of the company’s HSE strategy across assigned sites, providing strategic leadership, specialist guidance and direction aligned with the organisation’s growth and operational objectives.

Operational HSE Integration:

  • Partner with Site Leads, Safety Champions and operational management to embed HSE into daily operations and promote safety as an integral part of operational excellence.

Governance and Risk Management:

  • Lead the identification, assessment and control of significant operational risks in accordance with the Maersk HSSE management framework.

  • Review and approve/recommend risk assessments, Critical Task Analyses, Safe Work Instructions (SWIs), Risk Reduction Plans and Management of Change (MOC) requirements.

Compliance & Legal Assurance:

  • Ensure compliance with company HSE standards, policies, procedures and applicable South African legislation.

  • Maintain statutory appointments, registers, inspections, training and legal records, including liaison with the Department of Employment and Labour where required.

HSE Auditing & Assurance:

  • Conduct HSE audits, inspections, Gemba walks and assurance reviews across assigned sites.

  • Identify non-conformances, monitor corrective actions and drive continuous improvement to maintain an audit-ready management system aligned with ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 requirements.

Incident & Corrective Action Management:

  • Lead and/or facilitate incident, accident and near-miss investigations using appropriate root-cause analysis methodologies.

  • Ensure corrective and preventative actions are assigned, tracked and closed effectively, including monitoring non-conformances on the Fatal5 system.

Performance Management & Reporting:

  • Monitor leading and lagging HSE indicators, analyse trends and recurring risks, and provide management with actionable recommendations.

  • Compile and present monthly HSE performance and risk reports and track performance against objectives and improvement plans.

Training, Coaching & Competency:

  • Coach and support Site Leads and Safety Champions, facilitate HSE training and awareness programmes, identify competency gaps and promote learning through incidents, audits, inspections and lessons learned.

Contractor & Permit-to-Work Management:

  • Monitor contractor HSE compliance, including risk assessments, method statements, documentation and Permit-to-Work (PTW) requirements.

  • Conduct contractor inspections and audits where required.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Ensure effective, site-specific Emergency Response Plans are implemented, communicated and regularly reviewed.

  • Coordinate emergency drills, exercises, equipment readiness and lessons-learned activities.

Traffic & Workplace Safety:

  • Drive the implementation and continuous improvement of site-specific Traffic Management Plans (TMPs), workplace safety controls, legal appointments and other critical operational safety requirements.

Continuous Improvement & Standardisation:

  • Drive consistent HSE standards across sites while recognising site-specific risks and operational differences. Promote 5S, standardisation, benchmarking, best-practice sharing and continuous improvement across the organisation.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Build strong working relationships with operational leadership and key stakeholders, provide timely HSE advice, challenge unsafe practices and support a proactive, accountable and high-performing safety culture.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Someone with:

  • National Diploma in Safety and/or Environmental Management and/or Risk Management or Equivalent.

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in a warehousing and distribution environment in a full-time health & safety and environment role, across multiple sites. 

  • Certificate in safety management (SHEMTRAC, SAMTRAC, NEBOSH IGC, etc)

  • Professional registration with SAIOSH and SACPCMP (Advantageous).

  • Practical understanding of the implementation and maintenance of ISO 14001, 9001 & 45001.

  • Extensive knowledge and practical application of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its applicable Regulations, and the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA).

Required Attributes:

  • Coaching and mentoring – identify training needs for Site Leads, Safety Champions and operational teams.

  • Accountability and ownership – challenge and drive action where HSE standards are not being met.

  • Decision-making – ability to make sound, risk-based decisions in complex operational environments.

  • Problem-solving – identify root causes and develop practical solutions.

  • Change management – lead and embed HSE improvements across multiple sites.

  • Continuous improvement mindset – identify opportunities to improve systems, processes and performance.

Skills Required

  • National Diploma in Safety, Environmental Management, Risk Management, or equivalent
