The Homemaker/Companion provides homemaking and/or companion services to patients enabling them to remain in the home by supplementing the patient and family/caregiver abilities for home management in accordance with company standards and federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations.

Essential Activities and Tasks 

Care Management and Service Delivery - 80%

  • Provides homemaking services, such as bed making, light housework, laundering.

  • Plans, shops, prepares, or assists with nutritious meals and prescribed diets, which includes the clean-up of kitchen area.

  • Accompanies patient to medical appointments as specified in the care plan.

  • Runs errands with patient/family’s agreement.

  • Provides companionship and socialization for the patient.

  • Observes the patient for changes in general physical and mental conditions.  Reports any changes noted to the nurse.

  • Reminds patients to take their medication as prescribed and scheduled.

  • Assists to maintain safety in the home. Notifies nurse of safety concerns.

Quality, Compliance, and Risk Management - 20%

  • Adheres to the documentation and care procedures and standards of personal and professional conduct.

All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Must successfully complete all sections of the Homemaker written test and completes the Homemaker skills testing by return demonstration.

Experience

  • One year experience as a homemaker/ companion for an adult or family member required.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Must be insurable under professional liability and crime coverage policies as specified by insurance carrier underwriting standards.

Working Conditions and Special Requirements

  • Sitting - Up to 8 hours/day

  • Standing - Up to 6 hours/day

  • Walking - Up to 2 hours/day

  • Lifting, transferring, pushing, or pulling patients or equipment/supplies - Up to 50 pounds

  • Driving - Up to 6 hours/day

  • Work weekends, evenings, and holidays - Required as scheduled

  • Subject to patients with various disease processes - Occasional

  • May be exposed to infectious waste, disease, conditions, etc. including exposure to the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses - Work day

  • Risk Category for Exposure to Bloodborne Diseases - II

Skills Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of Homemaker written test and skills testing by return demonstration
  • One year experience as a homemaker/companion for an adult or family member
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Insurable under professional liability and crime coverage per insurer standards
