As Head of R&D, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of 20 highly educated professionals, each working in key technical domains such as soil mechanics, hydraulic transport, cutting technology, alternative fuels, material science, and dynamic systems. You will drive innovation by managing and expanding our strategic R&D programs, many of which are developed in collaboration with external partners or co-funded through public innovation subsidies. This role requires a balance of technical depth, strategic vision, and leadership, enabling Royal IHC to stay at the forefront of engineering excellence.
Your job:
In this role, you shape and lead Royal IHC’s innovation agenda with a focus on long-term commercial impact. You identify opportunities where technology can directly support business goals, and translate them into well-founded R&D programs. You collaborate across the business and with external networks, bringing people, ideas, and funding together to turn vision into reality.While you do not need to build solutions yourself, your understanding Technology is key to making the right strategic decisions. You work closely with internal departments and external stakeholders, including academic institutions, industry platforms, and governmental subsidy networks.
You are responsible for:
- Leading and coaching the Technology department (20 FTE) to deliver high-value innovation projects.
- Managing strategic R&D programs aligned with Royal IHC’s long-term goals.
- Building partnerships with knowledge institutions, suppliers, and innovation platforms.
- Acquiring and managing co-funded innovation projects and subsidy applications.
- Representing Royal IHC in external R&D and innovation networks.
- Ensuring that the department operates within budget and contributes to business-driven innovation.
Your profile:
You combine strategic leadership with deep understanding of how Technology can add value to our business. You are energized by working with experts, creating clarity in complex technical matters, and delivering innovations with measurable business value.
We are looking for someone who brings:
- MSc or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Civil Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.
- 5–8 years of experience in a research, engineering, or innovation leadership role within the maritime or related high-tech sector.
- Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and high-level stakeholders.
- Familiarity with innovation funding, R&D processes, and translating business needs into technical programs.
- Strong interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills, both internally and externally.
- Fluency in English is required; Dutch is a strong advantage.

Selection process:
After your application, a CV screening will take place. If your profile aligns sufficiently, a brief telephone intake with the Corporate Recruiter will follow. If not, you will be informed via email. The selection process consists of two interview rounds. The first interview will be with the manager and a direct colleague. During the second interview, another manager and someone from HR will join. If everyone is enthusiastic, a phone call will follow to discuss the terms of employment.
